MOJO In The City project launched

The MOJO In The City Golf Project was launched recently at the Constant Spring Golf Club in St Andrew. The project, which started in October, has seen 33 students from St Anne's and 21 students from St Aloysius Primary being introduced to the game of golf using the SNAG (starting new at golf) concept.

The concept is based on teaching golf using modified develop-mentally appropriate equipment, training tools and comprehensive planning including detailed lesson plans. The programme is age specific, in that different levels and ages of participants attract different methodology in introducing participants to the game. SNAG is designed to provide active and sound fundamental instructions that are important to further development.

Wayne Chai Chong, president of the Jamaica Golf Association (JGA), welcomed the MOJO In The City Golf Project while saying that he expected that in the future outstanding golfers will come out of the project, who will go all the way on the world stage.

MOJO Marketing committed US$16,000 to the project in the first instance, but it is expected that the project will continue beyond this year and that additional schools will be added in due course.

Good for the game

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Olivia 'Babsy' Grange had high praises for the sponsor of the project, MOJO Marketing. She noted the fact that the project is being introduced in the inner city of Kingston with two primary schools, and that it was very good for the game which is seen as an elitist sport, but that that notion will be dispelled in the future with the success of the project.

Additionally, the minister announced a scholarship to be named the Vittoria Marley Golf Scholarship. The qualifying details will be worked out by the JGA and Sports Development Foundation, who will fund the scholarship.

A presentation of $88,640 was made in the name of the late Vittoria Marley to Chai Chong by her aunt, Jody Munn Barrow. The money is to be used to bolster the inner-city golf project to which Vittoria gave a lot of support.
