Vaz lift Alberga Cup
Vaz Prep defeated defending champions Lannaman's Prep 1-0 at the Mona Bowl, University of the West Indies, last Saturday to take the Alberga Cup in the Bigga/JISA Prep School football competition.
The winning goal was scored by Vaz's Kimali Davis in the 18th minute. It was the only goal scored against Lannaman's in the competition this season.
Lannaman's tried valiantly to level the scores and had several near misses, including a shot that hit the inside of the crossbar and rebounded into play.
Wolde Harris, coach of Vaz, was elated for the win as last year they were on the losing end in the final.
"This year was a lot of hard work. First and foremost, give thanks to the Father up above, he guided us through a lot of challenges this year. Well done to Lannaman's, they won one trophy, the Henriques Cup, so congratulations to them; but today we wanted it a little bit more. Today, Vaz put in honest labour and it produced lovely faces," Harris said.
Coach of Lannaman's, Nigel Webb, blamed the surface for his team's loss saying, "It was a rough game. The playing surface for one, it threw off my players; we need a better surface to play on. As you see a number of times, the youngsters, when they allowed the ball to hit the ground instead of getting to the ball, they ended up 'handling' it."
Double-header
In the opening match of the afternoon's double-header Trafalgar Prep beat Mona Prep 1-0 to take the third place. Rushawn Walker scored the all-important goal three minutes into the first period of extra time to earn the win for Trafalgar. Their coach, Simone Morley, the only female in the competition, was quite happy for the win and promised that next year they would be coming for the trophy.
The awards function was held immediately following the final match. Special awards went to Alpha Prep for Most Improved School while Ajani Fairclough of Holy Childhood Prep scored 36 goals to cop the top goal score award.
The zone winners were: Zone 1 - Quest; Zone 2 - Vaz; Zone 3 - Tragalgar; Zone 4 - Lannaman's and Zone 5 - Hydel.
