DJ Firestarter - does the name sound familiar? I thought so.

The suave and talented Shane Graham has been burning up the music industry since his debut in 2001.

From working in radio to landing his first residency at Quad, Graham took a few moments to chill with Saturday Life and share his love for music and style.

When did you first realise your passion for music?

My father had always told me I would have been a musician, as I grew up around music - from playing the piano to bands. My parents were musicians.

How long have you been a DJ?

Four years. My friends are my major influence.

I took to DJs when I landed a job at RJR, they began to mentor me and it became serious from 2001. By 2006, I was fully into music, started my own show by then and, then I had my first residency at Quad.

Have you ever been affiliated with a specific sound system?

Calico International for some time.

Name the last four places/events at which you have played?

Fiction Nightclub, Blue Beat, Privilege club and Osmosis.

Do you have a 9 to 5 besides being a DJ, or is that your full-time job?

IT consultant at Addition Enterprises, Firestarter Incorporated.

What's your favourite genre of music and what makes it so special?

I have a passion for dance music; my parents are my influence.

What is the difference between computerised mixing and turntables. Which do you prefer?

It makes no difference, but how the DJ uses or places the sets to convey music to a particular audience matters.

How important is it to be well prepared for an event? Or do you just play whatever you feel the crowd wants to hear?

Being a DJ is about being prepared, just as anything else you do or take interest to. Being a DJ is 95 per cent preparation and five per cent execution.

How does your personal style reflect how you play?

My grandfather always said I should put my best foot forward, and that's what I put into my music. I am very meticulous.

What upcoming gigs do you have?

England, and I am heading to Miami and South Beach for some gigs.

Where do you shop locally?

Grandeur and Shimmer.

What makes your style of mixing and/or playing different from other disc jocks?

I believe in clean mixing, perfect timing and execution. I try to connect best with people, making people dance. If you are not feeling your music, it makes no sense.

Why is it important for DJs to interact with their audiences? Can't they just play their music and leave it at that?

If I wanted to do that, I would go to a friend's house or to the beach. If the music is not good, I will stay home. The music has to be important.

Many persons refer to you as the DJ who always wears a tie. Is that your signature style?

When I go out, I always try to incorporate a tie. My signature thing is hats and ties!

Describe your signature style in five words?

Mature, trendy, crisp, original and manly.

What advice would you give to young DJs?

Maintain your humility. Preparation is key. You have to connect with your crowd; you need to ensure that your music is in sync with the people.
