St Catherine cricket season begins Jan 23
The presentation function for the St Catherine Cricket Association 2010 season of competitions will be held on January 16, 2011. On that same day, the parish association will also launch the new season. A venue for this function will be announced at a later date.
Following on the launch, the 2011 season will commence on Sunday, January 23. As a result of this early start, the association has reminded all teams that the closing date for entry fees and the accompanying registration forms will be Sunday, December 19.
According to Winston Heathe, general secretary of the St Catherine Cricket Association, the new season of competitions promises to be exciting and competitive. All participating teams have been invited to a very important meeting at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Sunday, January 6, starting at 10 a.m.
LIME, Ja Broilers in 30-over KO final
High-riding LIME will go for their third trophy in the Digicel Business House Cricket Association season tomorrow when they take on defending champions Jamaica Broilers in the Best Dressed Chicken 30-over KO final at Chalmers Avenue.
LIME have already defeated NHT and Jamalco in the Noranda Bauxite Partners 35-over final and the Digicel Twenty20 final last Sunday, to be on course for a possible clean sweep of the four competitions run by the Business House Cricket Board.
But in Jamaica Broilers, they will find a very tough opponent and it should prove an intriguing contest for top honours.
LIME will look to current national player Horace Miller, former Jamaica and West Indies Under-19 player André McCarthy, along with former national youth player Yannick Elliott, the Mebourne all-rounders Damion Jacobs and Dave Johnson, along with consistent opening batsman Omar Allison and Kensington's Ryan Francis to pave the way for victory.
The Ephriam McLeod-coached Jamaica Broilers will counter with St Catherine Super League player Wayne Morgan, Robert Turner, Peter Caballero, Marinaro Dixon, Fabian Lakeman, Noel Officer, spinner Nicoy Lindo and current national youth player Pete Salmon in their bid to retain the trophy.
LIME are Digicel Twenty20 champions
LIME defeated Jamalco by 103 runs in the Digicel Twenty20 final last Sunday at Chalmers Avenue to secure their second trophy of the Business House cricket season.Batting first, LIME raced to 223 for five off their 20 overs, thanks mainly to Damion Jacobs, who scored an unbeaten 95, national player Horace Miller (71) and Omar Allison (38). Sherwayne Dixon took 2-34.
In reply, Jamalco could only muster 120 for six with Miguel Gordon getting 46, Winston 'Sala' Osbourne 25 not out and opener Errol Thomas 22. Jacobs claimed 3-37 and Fitzroy Peterkin 2-22.
JTA's Blackwood top 3-on-3 basketball presentation
Jamaica Teachers' Association point guard Dave Blackwood walked away with most awards at last Saturday's awards presentation of the three-on-three Division I and Division II basketball competitions at the Police Officers' Club. Blackwood, who also plays for top Division I team Urban Knights in the National Basketball League, led JTA to the Division II title, defeating Cari-Med 3-1 in the best of five finals at the Stadium Courts some weeks ago.
Blackwood was named MVP for Division II, overall MVP, as well as player of the final and top player in the Division II playoffs. UDC placed third in Division II.
Grace Cannings, meanwhile, captured the Division I title, having beaten defending champions MegaMart 3-1 in the best-of-five finals. G4S defeated Sagicor in the play-off for third and fourth places. Grace Cannings' Kevin Daley was named Division I MVP of the play-offs, while teammate Andrew Goulbourne copped the award as MVP of the finals. Omar Barnes of G4S also picked up an outstanding player award in Division I, and The Gleaner's Omar Wolfe for Division II.
All the top players received trophies and cash incentives. Captain Clifton Lumsden is president of the Business House Basketball Association.
Cal's pool tour continues next weekend
The fifth stop in the Cal's Manufacturing/Real Vibes Party Wine open eight-ball pool tour takes place on December 18 and 19 at Island Delight Seafood Restaurant and Sports Bar, Byndloss Cross Roads in Linstead, starting at noon each day.
The tournament offers a first prize of $80,000 and trophy, second $35,000 and trophy, third $15,000 and trophy, fourth $7,500, while players finishing from fifth to eighth place will each receive $2,500. Entry and re-entry fees are $1,000 for members of the Jamaica Billiards Association.
The tour comprises seven tournaments islandwide, one each month.
The last tournament in November, held at Chelsea's Pool Bar in New Kingston, was won by Montego Bay's Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove. To date, Blagrove has won twice on the tour, having won the opening leg at Hot Shots Pool Bar, Constant Spring Road, in August.
He will be among a large number of players vying for the top prize on the fifth tour.
Eagles unbeaten in Pattex Cup skittles
Unbeaten Eagles duly made it three in a row in the Henkel-sponsored Pattex Cup skittles competition last Sunday when they defeated Mystix 7-4 at Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza, in one of five matches played on Super Sunday.
Eagles are the only team to win three matches so far. However, defending champions Eastern All-Stars are also unbeaten, but their opponents, The Dip from Portmore, failed to show for Sunday's match due to a mix-up. This match has been rescheduled to be played tomorrow at The Dip in Gregory Park, Portmore.
In other matches played at Bejon's on Super Sunday, Rowe's Strikers came from 0-3 down to clip Waltham 6-5, Starliner also pipped Dragon 6-5, Willies beat Mister C 7-4, while Mercury clipped newcomers Hangover from Portmore 6-5. Hangover are yet to win from three matches.
Claro Clarendon semi-finals
Monymusk Sports Club will on Monday host both semi-finals of the Claro sponsored Clarendon Knock-out League.
Action kicks off at 1 p.m. when Premier League outfit Humble Lion take on York Town. Hosts Monymusk FC will entertain Clarendon's other Premier League team, Sporting Central Academy, in the feature at 3 p.m.
All four semi-finalists posted strong quarter-final wins. Sporting Central hammered Ebony Stars 6-0, Monymusk got past Comfort 5-1, Humble Lion came from behind to topple Spartan Athletic 3-1, while York Town, a Major League team, scored an upset 2-1 win over new South Central Confed representative, New Bowens.
Important Confed meeting today
A key meeting to finalise details for the start of the 2010-11 season of the South Central Confed Super League will take place at the RADA board-room in Manchester today. At 10 a.m., there will be the executive meeting and scheduled for 11:30 is an important meeting with all 12 participating clubs.
Chairman Dale Spencer told The Gleaner that all 12 participating teams have now paid registration fees and have been duly vetted, making the way clear for a December 18 start. Minor details, however, need to be ironed out. Fixures are set to be released on Monday from the league secretariat, which will be based at the Manchester FA office. To date, no declaration has been made of sponosrship.
Watson Grove, Queens Park square off
Favourites Watson Grove square off with Queens Park in the feature match as the Colin Fagan KO tournament kicks off at the Passagefort field at 3 p.m. tomorrow. Westport and newcomers East Portmore Portals meet in the opening game at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, in the LIME-sponsored league played last Sunday, Westport defeated Daytona 3-1.
Champions Fort meet Colours International
Defending champions Fort International open their account in Jamaica Domino Federation Charlie's JB Overproof Rum-Supreme Ventures Portmore/St Catherine Domino League against Colours International at Colours Sports Bar tomorrow. Colours went down 300-261 to North Street last Sunday and will have a tough match against the defending champions.

Black Lions on top
Black Lions maintained their lead atop the LIME-St Catherine FA Major Football League following an impressive 3-0 win over Wanderers on Thursday.
Demarley Dawkins, Jason Duhaney, and David Griffiths scored for Black Lions, who jumped to 19 points from seven games. Meanwhile, Portmore team Ports-mouth clipped Dunbeholden 1-0, courtesy of Nicholas Warren, and Royal Lakes crushed Cumberland 6-1. The competition continues today with a full slate of matches.
Jack Anderson Shield
Following the conclusion of intercollegiate football competition, where the University Technology ruled the roost after capturing the male and female top titles, attention will now be focused on the Jack Anderson Shield as an All Rural team will go up against an All Urban aggregation next Thursday, December 16, at the University of Technology playing field.
Nineteen members have been selected for the All Rural squad and 20 for the All Urban, with the numbers expected to be reduced to 16 on both sides following training sessions at two venues next Tuesday, December 14, at 1 p.m. Members of the rural squad will meet at the Northern Caribbean University (NCU), where Omar Davis is the coach, while members from the Urban squad will meet at the University of Technology, where Francis Murray will be the coach.
