Guyana replace injured Deonarine in T20 squad

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

Out-of-favour batsman, Sewnarine Chattergoon, has been called up to replace the injured Narsingh Deonarine in the Guyana squad for next month's Caribbean Twenty20 Championship.

The 27-year-old Deonarine was named in the original 14-man squad named last week, but continues to struggle with a shoulder injury which has prevented him from practising.

Guyana, who won this year's inaugural CT20 by beating Barbados in the final, face Jamaica in their opening match of the January 10-23 tournament in Antigua.

The 29-year-old Chattergoon, who has played four Tests and 18 one-day internationals for the West Indies, has struggled to get the ball away in his 10 T20 matches for Guyana and his selection ahead of West Indies Under-19 opener Rajendra Chandrika, the attacking Shemroy Barrington and former Windies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson is surprising.

Chattergoon, who averages under 18, is yet to score a T20 fifty and has a strike rate of less than a run-a-ball. Both he and Travis Dowlin were dropped from Guyana's team for this year's WICB one-day championship in Jamaica after their poor run in the Airtel Champions League in South Africa back in September.
