McNee, Haldane win singles titles
National junior champion Anthony McNee and Mikaylia Haldane captured the respective male and female Under-19 singles titles at the LIME-sponsored All Jamaica Junior Badminton Championships, which took place on the weekend at the G.C. Foster College in St Catherine.
McNee, who is also a Junior Pan American Games bronze medallist, thrashed defending champion Dennis Coke in three sets - 12-21, 21-15, 21-19 - to take home the boys' main prize.
On the girls' side, Haldane defeated Nockeisha White 21-12, 21-16.
However, both singles were denied a second title. In the boys' doubles final, Gerald Isaacs and Jonathon David defeated McNee and Coke 22-20, 21-19, while in the girls' equivalent, Sheinell Hyatt and Shameka Pink stopped Haldane and D'Anna-Marie Edwards 8-21, 21-16, 22-20.
Both Demetri Francis and Shane Wilson emerged triple crown winners. Francis won the boys' Under-11 singles, the doubles and mixed doubles titles. Wilson captured similar events in the Under-13 category.
Jade Clarke won the girls' Under-17 and 15 singles titles. She defeated Shameka Pink 21-8, 21-13 to take the Under-17 title, then beat Katherine Wynter 21-23, 21-13, 21-9 in the Under-15 final.
Postponed finals
Both boys' Under-15 and 17 finals between Samuel Ricketts and Wilson were postponed.
In the girls' Under-17 doubles final, Hyatt and Pink crushed Edwards and Eleanor Reynolds 21-17, 21-17, while the boys' final was postponed.
The Under-17 mixed doubles went to Jonathon David Smith and Katherine Wynter, who defeated Jamari Rose and Pink 21-11, 21-16.
Wynter and Clarke teamed up to beat Iesha Gordon and Diamond Cassanov 21-18, 21-14 to capture the girls' Under-15 doubles crown. The boys' equivalent was postponed.
Wilson and Gordon won the boys' and girls' Under-13 singles titles, respectively. Wilson defeated Francis 21-13, 21-14 in the boys' final, while Gordon beat Alana Bailey 21-11, 21-14 in the girls' section.
Francis returned to capture the Under-11 title when he defeated Jourdan Hydol-Smith 21-5, 21-8. Taina Daley won the girls' equivalent when she beat Emily Reynolds 21-10, 21-14.
The age-group doubles went to Alton Fogo and Francis who stopped Hydol-Smith and Brandon Wright 21-14, 21-11.
Francis captured his third title when he teamed up with Shania Dudley to capture the Under-11 mixed doubles. They defeated Hydol-Smith and Karie Dawson 21-10, 21-17 in the final.
