Below are edited excerpts from comments posted online by readers at www.jamaica-gleaner.com reacting to yesterday's lead story, 'Commish shakes 'em up - Senior cops face wide-scale transfers for 2011'.

Something is fundamentally wrong

We are now conditioned to accept killing of our brothers and sisters in large numbers as a norm. The decrease, though encouraging, is still very shocking. I agree with Owen Ellington in not being satisfied. The strategy and implementation have to be immediate. Rome is burning.

The combined population of Los Angeles and New York is 23.2 million; their murder total combined is 1,276 for 2009, which is less than Jamaica that has only 2.8 million people. Those cities are still considered violent cities, though improved over the years. It doesn't add up. Something is fundamentally wrong with the fabric of our society in Jamaica.

We must start laying the groundwork to rebuild Jamaica; otherwise, we will live the 21st century in the wilderness of a failed society where decadence is an acceptable norm.

Good move

I welcome the move and I am looking for the next big list of persons to be transferred. All those corrupt ones should be removed from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, so you can start building a professional force which will garner the people's respect and trust, which will result in the reduction of crimes!

Transfers to what end?

What purposes do these transfer serve? The leaders in the heart of the 'badlands', in the Kingston garrisons, remain untouched and entrenched. Please! This is just salad dressing.

JCF is outdated

They need a lot of shaking up with the subofficers too, for they abuse their powers a lot. The police force is outdated, and way behind in fighting today's crimes. First, there should be improved recruiting methods with better training in the most modern way to combat these crimes. Second, they need to double up on their mobility, with the vehicles equipped with the latest in crime-fighting equipment and, above all, should be courteous, and only shoot at someone if they believe that their lives are in danger.

Ask America for help in training the police personnel, for most of our crimes are similar to those committed in the USA, and most of theirs are solved.
