Re: yesterday's editorial titled 'Breathing easier over Air Jamaica'.

give air j its due

I agree that the airline cannot run on sentiment, but it also cannot run on bad management and a devaluing of the Air J brand. Coca-Cola tried to change its brand and had to go back. Air J may have lost a lot of money but it also provided bodies to fill those seats.

increase gov't's stake

In order to protect the interest of the Jamaican people at home and abroad, the Government of Jamaica should increase its stake to 30 per cent. This would make it easier to renationalise Air Jamaica if Caribbean Airlines decides in the future that the acquisition is not working for them.

As we all know, without our national carrier, the cost of North American carriers would not be affordable to most. And that would be bad for Jamaica.

Re: yesterday's lead story: 'Don't ease up - Business heads wary of war on crime losing steam'.

nine-day wonder

The so-called 'commitment to dismantle garrisons' is merely an election-manifesto technicality. In the absence of any policy or strategy, the sincerity of such talk has always been questionable.

The so-called war on crime was instigated by the US extradition request for Dudus. The Government merely bowed to external pressure. Now that the pressure has subsided, the garrisons will resume their principal function as electoral mechanisms.

Could it be the case that he JCC was possibly fooled long before the initial success?

get tough on crime

The issue of corruption in the political system remains a serious one and I totally agree with the JCC that the Government has not shown any interest or initiative in wanting to dismantle the garrison constituencies and to implement new laws that would make it a crime for an MP to have any kind of relationship with a don or person who has a criminal background.

This is a problem that must be addressed, not only to restore the integrity of the political system but also to help fight crime and to move the country forward.
