Young trio in Australia squad

MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC):

Three young players shrugged off the disappointment of missing the Commonwealth Games to gain selection to Australia's team for a three-Test tour of Jamaica, which has been dubbed the Supreme Ventures Sunshine Series.

Goal shooter Kate Beveridge, midfielder Madison Browne and defender Amy Steel were the final three axed from a squad of 15 before the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year.

The trio impressed national coach Norma Plummer at a training camp this week and they have been given a chance to show their form before the World Championship later this year.

"This is a great opportunity for Amy, who has been a regular presence in the squad of 15," said Plummer. "And it gives Madison and Kate the chance to test the waters, and get some experience against the Caribbean style, which is quite different."

Plummer added: "Our players don't get the opportunity to play on that style very often; this will allow them to experiment against the height and agility of the No.4 team in the world.

"This tour gives us the opportunity to expand the international experience of the squad before World Championships later this year."

Beveridge is known for her long-range goal attempts, high arcing shots and very high-accuracy rate. She is also known for her unique shooting style, having her arms straight while shooting.

Steel is one of the most experienced members of the Australian FastNet Diamonds, and will be looking to continue her good form. Still developing and learning, the young defender is set to have a long career at the top of Australian netball.

Preparations

Browne is one of the fastest players in the squad, despite being the shortest player. She has worn seven caps for the Australians in the last two years.

The Diamonds will play three Tests in Kingston on January 12, 14 and 16 as part of their preparations for the World Championship in July.

The three-Test Series will be the Diamonds, first hit-out of 2011 and their first match since their gold medal extra-time defeat in the Commonwealth Games last October.

Squad: Sharelle McMahon (captain), Natalie von Bertouch, Kate Beveridge, Madison Browne, Rebecca Bulley, Catherine Cox, Susan Fuhrmann, Laura Geitz, Kimberlee Green, Natalie Medhurst, Lauren Nourse, Amy Steel.
