Online feedback
Below is feedback from online readers of www.jamaica-gleaner.com on the shooting of Honduran fishers.
Paying consequences
Based on what is being reported, I support the Jamaican Coastguard 100 per cent. While the loss of life is sad, when you decide to commit a crime, you should take all consequences into account.
One consequence is that you will get caught, and then you should give up. If you choose to resist, your resistance might cost you your life.

Sad turn of events
Unfortunate development! Unnecessarily belligerent posture!
Hope it will not be used to justify financially unaffordable outlays, bolstering the capabilities of the JDF.

Gov't has my support
If these illegal fisherman are allowed to bully their way into Jamaica's territorial waters, it will not be long before smugglers become even bolder in their trade of contraband, specifically guns and drugs.
I fully agree with the Government's strong stance on the issue of their responsibility. It is also partly the responsibility of the Honduran government to act sensibly, and to support law and order, not promote a Wild West environment.
Caving in to international bullying only encourages terrorists, as some countries already know. The Jamaica Defence Force crew acted with good restraint when they sought to avoid further casualties.

Heavy-handed action?
What about the other fishing vessels that ply the Jamaican waters? Is the same treatment going to be meted out to them? Careful, or we may end up paying for an unnecessary war. That said, Jamaica has every right to protect its economic interest and resources.

Stay alert
Every day these Hondurans come to Jamaica and plunder our resources. I hope that the Jamaica Defence Force Coastguard and the marine police remain vigilant in their efforts to secure our coastal waters and, by extension, the livelihoods of our fisherfolk.

Tame that tongue
What can be solved diplomatically could be lost through arrogant posturing. We must protect our borders against all illegal products entering our country, but not at the stake of heavy-handed action.
This tragedy must be resolved before we create environments of hate with our neighbours. Our security forces cannot be seen as a raiding party but a protective force when you enter our waters legally and an arresting force when you are not.
