Leaders Portmore United beat the fighting Reno at Frome Sports Complex in their Digicel Premier League contest yesterday.
Despite the stout challenge of the home team, Portmore were too good and the home teams' lone goal from Craig Foster (84th) was not enough to cancel Steven Morrissey's double strike at the 19th and 56th minutes.
Portmore's coach, Linval Dixon, said that as leaders it is important that his team maintain a standard of winning games.
"The third round is gonna be a tough round with everybody coming for points and it's not about pretty, attractive football, it's about who wants it more and we at the top of the table have to work hard to maintain that."
Portmore, which started level on 38 points with Tivoli Gardens, now have 41, while Reno remained on 28.
Tivoli Gardens also have 41 points, following their 3-2 win over Benfica at Drax Hall.
Meanwhile, Michael Graham, the assistant coach of Reno, said: "Coming off the break we got by Tivoli and were hoping to win today, but that did not happen.
"We will be treating every game in this third round seriously because this third round is a detrimental round and we need to step out of the position that we've found ourselves in so that we can be in the top six because that is really our intention."
