After a hard-fought year, Calabar regained their title as undisputed leaders in high school taekwondo team sparring.

The Red Hills Road boys retained their title on points although they took a late battering from Cornwall College in the final match of the season, the Junior Taekwondo Invitational, at the University of Technology auditorium in December.

President of the Jamaica Taekwondo Association, Arthur Barrows, handed over the coveted trophy at the school on Wednesday.

Barrows, a Calabar old boy himself, said the better team won and he was happy that it was his school which had "the better men".

Pioneers in high school taekwondo, Calabar have won the title more than any other team in the last five years, despite tough challenges from Kingston College and Jamaica College.

Calabar, Kingston College, Jamaica College, Cornwall College and Wolmer's contest the competition, which comprises team sparring in five tournaments, starting in April and culminating November.

Qualify adult team

Oshane Murray, who leads the Calabar attack, is one of only two juniors to qualify for the national adult combined martial arts team since its inception, the other being Kenneth Edwards.

Nicholas Dussard fought on the team when it carried a junior slot, which it no longer does.

The Jamaica combined martial arts team are International Sports Karate Association champions at team sparring.
