Cal's pool tour continues Jan 29


Closing date for entries for the sixth and penultimate round of the Cal's Manufacturing/Real Vibes Party Wine pool tour is next Wednesday, January 26 at Hot Shots Pool Bar, 103 Constant Spring Road, during their weekly mini-tournaments.

The tournament which offers a first prize of $80,000 will be held at Palm Court Sports Bar & Grill, West End Road in Negril, on the weekend of January 29 and 30.

The fifth tournament, held at Island Delight in Linstead on December 18 and 19, was won by Rhys Chen from Ocho Rios. He defeated Ocheign Carlos 4-1 in the best-of-seven final to capture the $80,000 prize and trophy.

In the five tournaments played so far, Montego Bay's Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove has won two, the first back in August at Hot Shot and the second in November at Chelsea in Kingston.

Calhoun Melville won the second tournament in Mandeville in September, while Jody Mullings captured the fourth in October in Montego Bay.

Tournament director, Leslie 'Toothpick' Puranda, said he was expecting 70 entries, which would make it the biggest so far.

The tour, which embraces the best players in the island, offers a second prize of $35,000, third $15,000 and fourth $7,500, with players finishing from fifth to eighth places each receiving $2,500.

Entry and re-entry fees are $1,000 for each member of the Jamaica Billiards Association, but new members are required to pay $3,000 to gain immediate entry.The seventh and final tournament is scheduled for Mystix Sports Bar, 783/4 Hagley Park Road, on February 26 and 27.

East Portmore await Daytona

Newcomers East Portmore Portals (three points), boosted by their first-ever league win, a 3-1 triumph against Braeton United last Sunday, take on Daytona in the opening game in the LIME-sponsored Portmore Division Two Football League tomorrow at Ferdie Neita Park, match time 1 p.m. In the feature game at the venue, Westport challenge Queens Park. Over in Hellshire, Hellshire United oppose Braeton United at 3 p.m. Watson Grove who are idle today, lead the league on 11 points.

Super Sunday in Pattex Cup skittles

The Henkel-sponsored Pattex Cup skittles competition moves into a crucial stage tomorrow with all teams contesting what is dubbed 'Super Sunday' at Mystix Sports Bar, 783/4 Hagley Park Road.

The action for this, the final round of matches in the preliminary round, commences at 1 p.m. with Mister C vs Willies and Hangover vs Mercury.

In the second set of matches at 4 p.m., defending champions and Zone 'A' winners Eastern All-Stars will oppose The Dip, while Starliner take on Dragon.

In the third set of matches at 7 p.m., Zone 'C' winners Eagles will oppose home team Mystix while Waltham Strikers are up against Rowe's Strikers.

Apart from Eagles and Rowe's, who have both advanced to the quarter-finals, other quarter-final spots are up for grabs tomorrow with a number of teams tied going into Super Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Sistas singles championship is scheduled to start in another week or two, with Willies' Winston 'Wimpy' Lyew the defending champion.

Frazer's Whip still hot

Frazer's Whip continued their hot run this season after registering a 2-0 victory over Christian Pen in the LIME St Catherine FA Division One Football League on Thursday.

Red-hot young striker Jevaune Benjamin struck in the eighth minute, while Jamaica junior player, Neco Brett (89th), added the second goal. In another game, Treadways recovered from their mid-season loss to Frazer's as they edged Pen Acres 1-0 via Jordain Almond's goal.

Frazer's have so far copped two titles, the biggest being the LIME knockout in which they defeated Super League club Rivoli United 1-0. They also won the Division One mid-season final after they clobbered Treadways 5-0.

Eagle View, Masterpiece in hot battle

Eagle View and Masterpiece are caught in a hot battle in the Jamaica Domino Federation/Charley's JB Overproof Rum/Supreme Ventures Portmore/St Catherine Domino League tomorrow at Old Braeton main road.

Both teams are on 24 points from six games. However, when the tables are cleared tomorrow night one team's unbeaten record will be dented. In other games, hot team Right Stuff, the third of four unbeaten teams, knock bones with Caymanas Track at Cedar Grove, Garveymeade welcome Hurricane at Garveymeade Sports Club, Ackee Pod host Village Link, Fort International entertain Westchester Nuckuz at Passagefort Drive, Lime Tree Grove await Passagefort United at Lime Tree, Ken's Wildflower oppose Triple X Old Harbour at Portmore Plaza, Eradication challenge North Street United at Gregory Park, and Colours Sports Club at home against Correctional Services. The fourth unbeaten club, Caribbean Classic, are on a bye. All matches begin at 11:30 a.m.

Three stalwarts honoured by Portmore Cricket

Three Jamaica cricket stalwarts, including a legend of international cricket, former ICC umpire Steve Bucknor, OJ, former Jamaica opening batsman Delroy Morgan, and George Powell were honoured at a recent awards presentation for the Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League.

Lester 'Ken' Crooks was also given a special award for his dedication to Portmore cricket.

Bucknor, who began his international umpiring career in 1989, has officiated in a record 128 Tests. He has also stood in 181 ODIs, including five consecutive World Cup finals since 1992 - the most by any umpire. Bucknor has been on the ICC's elite panel since 2002.

Morgan is still active in the game as he plays for league champions Colours International in Wray and Nephew-sponsored community league, whereas Powell, who was not present at the function is, a former Jamaica cricketer.

South Central Super League

Defending South Central Super League champions Meadows will be chasing a fourth consecutive victory when they travel to fellow St Catherine team Naggo Head for a 3 p.m. assignment.

Prior to last weekend's round, only Meadows and Bodles had perfect win streaks. However, Meadows stunned newcomers Newell 3-1 while Bodles were beaten 1-0 by Rivoli, who now have seven points from three games.

In other results from last weekend's third round: New Bowens of Clarendon drew 1-1 with Mile Gully, host De la Vega City got their first victory with a 1-0 win over Newland, Monymusk and Tru-Juice ended 0-0, and Downs of Manchester stopped Naggo Head 2-0.

The other games on this weekend are: Bodles vs De la Vega, Newland vs New Bowens (today); and Mile Gully vs Rivoli, Tru-Juice vs Downs and Newell vs Monymusk at Hounslow (tomorrow).

Barrett leads Manchester scorers

Cleon Barrett is the clear early leader in the goalscoring charts of The Captain's Bakery-sponsored Manchester Major League, after his two goals helped beat newcomers Comfort 3-2 in an exciting third-round game last weekend.

Barrett, who has had some exposure to Premier League football, having being signed to Harbour View and Sporting Central in the past, also scored the lone strike in his team's 1-0 win over Kendal.

Barrett's early form now makes him the most anticipated player to watch, and hence makes him key in the feature clash between Porus and Georges Valley at the deCarteret College playing field tomorrow at 3 p.m. Other scheduled matches are: New Green vs Kendal at Brooks Park and Comfort hosting Starliner (today).

Kendal will enter this weekend's matchup on a high after spanking Mandeville United 3-0 with goals from Maurice Peart, Clayton Berry and an own goal.

Clarendon Major League

Gimme-me-bit will host today's second-round feature games in 2011 Clarendon Claro Major League, sponsored by The Captain's Bakery. The double-header, which features promotional gestures by the sponsors, begins at 1 p.m. with Milk River tackling Gayle while at 3 p.m. the hosts entertain Woodhall.

Last weekend, the Major League kicked off with a double-header at Turner's Oval, with Spartan Athletic defeating Rock River 2-1 and Woodhall stopping Freetown by the same margin.

In midweek action, Andre Morgan's two goals helped York Town outscore Milk River 4-2 and Gimme-Me-Bit defeated Gayle 2-0. Earlier on Monday, Original Hazard and Longwood ended 1-1 at the Mineral Heights field.

Kaiser meet

A fairly new meet on the Jamaica schools athletic calendar will take place today at the Noranda Bauxite Sports Club, formerly Kaiser Sports Club, near Discovery Bay, St Ann.

The event is being run under the banner of the North Central Amateur Athletic Association. The meet targets schools in the St Ann, St Mary and St Catherine belt but is open to schools across the island. The start time is 9 a.m.

The events to be facilitated are: 3000m for women, 5000 for men, 100m, 2000m, 400m, 4x100m, 4x400 and field events, notably shot put and discus.

In addition to the track and field events, the organisers are catering for children, offering various play activities like bounceabout and rides.
