- Cal's pool tour continues in Negril
Fifty-nine entries were received for the sixth and penultimate tournament in the Cal's Manufacturing/ Real Vibes Party Wine eight-ball pool tour in Negril today and tomorrow, starting at 1 p.m. each day.
Among the entries are the winners of the five previous tournaments which commenced last August at Hot Shots, 103 Constant Spring Road. That tournament was won by Montego Bay's Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove, who came back to win the fourth stop on the tour in November at Chelsea in Kingston.
Also back is Calhoun Melville, who won the second stop of the tour in Mandeville, Jody Mullings (October), who captured the third in Montego Bay, and Rhys Chin (December), who won the fifth at Island Delight in Linstead.
The tournament offers a first prize of $80,000 and a trophy, second $35,000 and trophy, third $15,000, fourth $7,500, with players finishing from fifth to eighth places each receiving $2,500.
Entry and re-entry fees are $1,000 for each member of the Jamaica Billiards Association, but new members are required to pay $3,000 to gain immediate entry.
The seventh and final tournament is scheduled for Mystix Sports Bar, 783/4 Hagley Park Road, on February 26 and 27.
- Jamaica Domino Council vs Portmore
The Jamaica Domino Council Association (JDCA) will oppose a select team from Portmore in a friendly tournament today at Garveymeade Sports Club, starting at 5 p.m.
The JDCA, formerly Jamaica Domino Association, is active once again and the executive is hoping to impact on the sport this year.
President of the JDCA is Althea Waler-Shaw, Archelous Lennon (vice-president), Tamara Brown (secretary), Richard Francis (treasurer) with Lloyd Brooks assistant secretary and local coordinator.
- Pattex Cup skittles qualifiers
Cup holders Eastern All-Stars and former champions Eagles were among the teams advancing to the quarter-finals of the Henkel-sponsored Pattex Cup skittles competition after last Sunday's slate of matches at Mystix Sports Bar, 783/4 Hagley Park Road.
Eagles beat home team Mystix 6-4 to top Zone 'C' of the competition, Eastern All-Stars beat Portmore's The Dip 6-3 to win Zone 'B', while Mister C from Spanish Town blanked Willies Strikers 6-0 to capture Zone 'A'.
Other qualifiers are Starliner, Waltham, Olympic Strikers and The Dip, while Mercury and Willies will face off at Mercury in Spanish Town tomorrow to see who qualifies as the best third-place team from Zone 'A'.
Portmore-based Hangover ended this their first season on a high when they crushed Mercury 6-2, (6-0) on the Super Sunday card.
Meanwhile, the Henkel-sponsored Sistas singles championship is set to start in early February with Willies' Winston 'Wimpy' Lyew the defending champion.
- Meadows, Rivoli lead South Central Super League
The first half of the preliminary round of the South Central Super League will be completed this weekend.
Defending champions Meadows and Rivoli are locked at the top of the standings on 10 points each, with identical records of three wins and a draw. Last weekend, Meadows failed in their bid to notch four wins in a row when they were unexpectedly held to an exciting 2-2 draw with struggling Naggo Head.
Rivoli and Monymusk were the only teams to record victories last weekend. Rivoli travelled away to Manchester to beat Mile Gully 2-0 while Monymusk also recorded an away victory against Newell of St Elizabeth.
In other results from last weekend's fourth round: Bodles and De la Vega drew 1-1, so did Newland and New Bowen, while Downs and Tru-Juice ended 0-0.
Games slated for today: De la Vega vs Mile Gully; Newland vs Bodles and Meadows vs Tru-Juice. Tomorrow: Newland vs New Bowens; Mile Gully vs Rivoli, Tru-Juice vs Downs and Newell vs Monymusk at Hounslow.
- Bodles host Clarendon Major League clashes today
Bodles playing field will host today's third-round feature games in 2011 Clarendon Claro Major League, sponsored by The Captain's Bakery. The day's double-header also features promotional gestures by the sponsors.
Action on the field begins at 1 p.m. with fourth-place team Original Hazard against Milk River, while at 3 p.m., Freetown with just a single point, take on York Town (four pts.)
In last weekend's double-header hosted at Gimme-Me-Bit, Milk River defeated Gayle FC 1-0 while the hosts stopped Woodhall 2-0. Gimme-Me-Bit would continue their good early-season showing four days later, getting the better of Rock River 3-2. The three consecutive wins have taken them to the top of the standings on nine points, followed by Woodhall and Spartan Athletic, who are both on six points.
On Thursday, Woodhall rebounded from their loss to the leaders with a convincing 4-0 win over Gayle.
- Barrett heats up Manchester Major League
Cleon Barrett's form will be closely watched as Porus prepare to take on Starliner today at home in the feature game of The Captain's Bakery-sponsored Manchester Major League.
Barrett notched his fourth goal in three games to lead Porus to an exciting 3-2 away win over Georges Valley last weekend. Porus have nine points but still trail leaders Hillstars, who have 10 points but have played one game more. Comfort and New Green hold on to third place with six points each, while Kendal and Georges Valley follow with four points each.
In other key results from the previous week's round, Twain Walcott scored to give New Green a 1-0 win over Kendal at Brooks Park while Hillstars hammered Young Diamonds 4-0.
Matches on this weekend are: Comfort vs Young Diamonds and Kendal vs Hillstars (today). Tomorrow's lone encounter sees Georges Valley against Mandeville United at deCarteret College playing field.
- Watson Grove, Westport clash
Leaders Watson Grove hunt their fourth straight win of the season as they clash with second-place Westport in the opening match of a double-header in a LIME-sponsored Portmore Division Two Football League match tomorrow, at the Passagefort field, match time 1 p.m. In the second match at the venue, East Portmore Portal, still on a high from their 3-0 win over Daytona in the last round, challenge wounded Queen's Park. Queen's Park lost 2-0 to Westport. At Hellshire, Daytona (one point) take on Braeton United (zero point) in a bottom-of-the-table clash.
- Masterpiece in seventh heaven
Masterpiece notched their seventh win of the season after knocking off Eagle View 300-285 in an exciting match at Old Braeton main road, as the Jamaica Domino Federation/Charley's JB White Overproof Rum/Supreme Ventures Portmore/St Catherine Domino League continued on Sunday.
The result meant that only Masterpiece (28 points) and two other clubs, Right Stuff, and Caribbean Classic, who had a bye, remained unbeaten this season. In other games, Right Stuff thumped Caymanas Track 300-239, defending champs Fort International dispatched Westchester Nuckuz 300-250, Correctional Services defeated Colours Sports Bar 300-269, Eradication beat North Street United 300-277, Ken's Wildflower whipped Triple X Old Harbour Bay 300-238, Passagefort United down Lime Tree Grove 300-289, Ackee Pod swamped Village Link 300-202, whereas Hurricane humiliated Garveymeade 300-220
- McCook's Pen shock Portsmouth 3-2
McCook's Pen shocked mid-season champions Portsmouth 3-2 in a five-goal thriller, in a LIME-sponsored St Catherine FA Major League last weekend.
Chadwick Taylor struck a double in the 23rd and 34th minutes and Damion Wellington sealed the win with a 80th-minute goal. Kevin Williams (12th) and Dwayne Taylor (60th) netted for Portsmouth.
In other games, Mark Walters notched a hat-trick as Rodwood blanked Cumberland 3-0, Wanderers tagged Dunbeholden 2-0, leaders Black Lions edged DB Basovak 1-0, whereas Royal Lakes defeated Albion 4-2.
- KC, Campion, Ardenne, St Jago win in ISSA TT
Kingston College drubbed St George's 5-0 and 4-1 in boys under-19 and under-16, respectively, Campion blanked Jamaica College 5-0 and 5-0 in boys' under-19 and under-16, St Jago crushed Wolmer's 4-1 in boys under-16, and Ardenne trounced Norman Manley 4-1 in boys' under-16, as the ISSA table tennis competition continued on Thursday.
St Jago have now won four matches from as many starts in boys' under-16 Group Two to lead the points standings in this group. They are followed by former champions KC and Wolmer's on seven points each, Ardenne and St George's on five points apiece and Norman Manley four points. The top three finishers will progress to semi-finals.
Hillel and JC are tied atop the boys under-16 Group One standings on four points each, ahead of Calabar three points, defending champions Campion two points, and Meadow-brook one point. The top three finishers will advance to the semis.
In boys' under-19 Group One, Campion lead with four points, followed by Hillel and JC on three points each, and defending champions Calabar two points.
In boys' under-19 Group Two, St George's have three points, KC two points and Wolmer's one point.
The top two finishers in these two groups will progress to semi-finals.
In individual results in the Ardenne versus Norman Manley contest on Thursday, Ricardo Mills overpowered Machel Taylor 3-0, Romario Thenstead blew away Shaquille Hooker 3-0, Daniel Rainford outplayed Michael Nembhard 3-1 and Brandon Scott-Williams turned back Ryan Allman 3-1, for Ardenne's four wins.
Michael Brown stopped Brian Mils 3-0, to pull one back for Norman Manley.
The competition continues on Monday with two girls' matches, starting at 2:30 p.m. Campion will entertain Immaculate in under-19 and Wolmer's will be at home to Hillel in under-16 contest.
- Portmore pairs face off
The best pairs in Portmore face off in a knockout domino tournament at the Ken's Wildflower Sports Bar located at Portmore Plaza, Port Henderson, tomorrow. The tournament, which is sponsored by Lester 'Ken' Crooks, the proprietor of Ken's Wildflower Sports Bar Restaurant and Lounge, will start at noon. Registration of players begins at 11 a.m. The winning pair will take home $20,000 while second place will receive $15,000.
