Wadadah win title
Western Bureau:
Wadadah captured the 2010-11 Captain's Bakery & Grill Western Super League mid-season title on Sunday night when they defeated Seba United 1-0 at Jarrett Park. They walked away with the coveted trophy and $150,000.
In a game full of excitement but characterised by a spate of missed chances at both ends, the Daniel Rickettes-coached Wadadah ended Seba United's 10-game unbeaten streak courtesy of a first-half strike by defender Damian Jackson.
"This is a good, morale-boosting win going into the competition's second round," said Rickettes. "No team has ever won the mid-season and gone on to win the league title in the same year, but we intend to change that this year."
For Seba United's Peruvian coach, Danilo Barrigga, who was bidding to complete the season unbeaten, he said his team would be heading back to the drawing board to fix the weaknesses that were exploited by Wadadah.
"We wanted to go through the season unbeaten, but now that we have lost this game, we just have to regroup and get back to winning ways," said Barrigga. "I am confident that we will go on to win this competition."
Seba United enjoyed the better of the early exchanges but were kept off the scoresheet by stout-hearted defending from the Mark Williams-led Wadadah back line.
Seba United came perilously close to scoring in the 12th minute when Kemar James broke free down the left flank, but his torrid shot struck the crossbar.
Five minutes later, Wadadah also came close when the wily Curtis Palmer dribbled through the heart of the Seba defence, but fired wide.
After squandering another good chance in the 27th minute when Marvin Muirhead's close-range free kick was parried wide by goalkeeper Neil Lynch, Wadadah took the lead from the resulting corner kick.
All-out attack
Jackson rose high to outjump the Seba defence and his accurate header flew into the roof of the net, making the half-time score 1-0.
Seba United started the second half in all-out attack, putting the Wadadah defence under non-stop pressure. They should have scored in the 52nd minute when Garth Johnson got away before goal but he fired wide of the advancing goalkeeper Wilton Shaw and the goal.
Seba wasted back-to-back chances in 60th and 64th minutes. Iton Scott was fortunate enough to find himself clear inside the box on both occasions but his shots were woefully off target.
Wadadah came to life briefly in the 75th minute when Palmer shook up the Seba defence with one of his dazzling dribbles but, like he did earlier, he struck his shot wide of the goal.
Earlier, the US beat Jamaica 2-1 in an Under-17 game.
