Red-hot Seba United win again

Western Bureau:

Leaders Seba United made it 11 wins from 13 starts in the 2010-11 Captain's Bakery Western Super League on Sunday afternoon, when they blunted the challenge of Frome 3-1 in their game at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay.

By virtue of their win, the Seba United team which scored through the prolific Jeremy Bucknor (two) and Kemar James, has increased their points tally to 35, five more than second-place Wadadah, which had a 2-1 win against struggling Exidos.

In other games on the weekend, former champions Granville suffered their fifth defeat of the season, going down 1-0 to Catherine Hall in a St James derby. Harmony clipped Russia 1-0, while Tomorrow's People outscored 'cellar dwellers' Cousin's Cove 2-1.

The game between Bamboo and Montpelier came to a premature end in the 87th minute when one of the assistant referees was reportedly physically abused by a Bamboo team official and a decision was taken to halt the game. Interestingly, the Bamboo team was leading 1-0 at the time.

"It is a matter for the competition's disciplinary committee to settle," a source close to the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation told The Gleaner yesterday. "I must admit that this is somewhat unusual since Bamboo were on the verge of winning the game."

Dazzling dribble

In the game at Jarrett Park, Seba took the lead in the 18th minute when Bucknor left the Frome defence befuddled with a dazzling dribble, before booting home to give the Danilo Barigga-coached team a 1-0 lead.

However, with the Seba United defence becoming somewhat complacent, Frome drew level in the 37th minute. Derrick Malcolm skilfully beat Seba United's offside trap and fired past goalkeeper Tristan Bernard, making the half-time score 1-1.

Down into second-half play, Seba regained the lead in the 48th minute. The hard-working James unleashed a spectacular volley, which the Frome goalkeeper could only admire as it crashed into the roof of the net, making the score 2-1.

Seba United sealed the issue in the 79th minute when the unmarked Bucknor pounced on a lofted cross before the goal and nodded out of the reach of goalkeeper Shamar Mullings, making the final score 3-1.

In their game against Exidos, mid-season champions Wadadah, playing without star striker Curtis Palmer, got their 2-1 win via goals from Damion Reid and Damian Chambers. Husana Johnson got Exidos' consolation goal.

With the second and decisive round of the 12-team competition now on in earnest, the current point standings is as follows: Seba United 35, Wadadah 30, Frome 23, Catherine Hall 19, Granville 18, Harmony 18, Tomorrow's People 17, Montpelier 16, Russia 12, Bamboo 11, Exidos eight and Cousin's Cove six.
