Lyew makes winning start in Sistas skittles

As the opening round of the Henkel-sponsored Sistas skittles singles championship commenced last Saturday, defending champion Winston 'Wimpy' Lyew from Willies Strikers made a successful start in defence of his title.

He blanked Simon Edwards from Mister C 2-0 at Mystix Sports Bar, 78 ³/⁴ Hagley Park Road.

Lyew has been drawn to meet Eagles' captain Clinton 'Fly Up' Thompson in second-round action at the same venue tonight starting, at 7:00.

Other players advancing to the second round following wins last Saturday are former champions Leslie 'Toothpick' Puranda from Eagles and Nehemiah 'Fatta' Henry from Eastern All-Stars; Paul Latchman from Willies; two-time champion Fitzroy 'Pail' Blair from Eastern; five-time champion Robert McKen from Eagles, who drew a bye to the second round; along with Willies' Karyl Walker and Keito Stephens, who will meet the winner of the remaining first-round match between Eagles' Dane Jones and David 'Shabba' Adams from Starliner, to be played tonight.

Puranda came from a game down to beat Mister C's Aubyn Flynn 2-1, while Latchman defeated former champion Everett Melbourne from Eagles 2-0.

Tonight's most-anticipated clash pits Puranda against 'Fatta' Henry, while other interesting matches are McKen versus the veteran Errol Wright from Dragon, Rudolph 'Niah' Mullings from Eagles vs Paul Latchman, and Blair vs R. Grant.

Meanwhile, Willies came from behind to beat Zone 'B' winners Eagles 6-4 at Eastern All-Stars Skittles Club, 107 Windward Road, last Sunday to advance to the semi-final of the Pattex Cup competition. In the second quarter-final match, Mystix also came from behind (4-1 down) to beat Mister C 6-4 at the same venue.

Tomorrow's remaining quarter-final matches at Hughenden Plaza will see defending champions Eastern All-Stars vs Waltham Strikers, and Olympic Strikers vs Starliner. The semi-final will be played on Sunday, February 20, at Mercury Skittles Club, Old Harbour Road.

Mona, St Patrick'slead INSPORTS netball

Defending champions Mona and St Patrick's maintained their unbeaten runs as the Corporate Area INSPORTS Primary Schools Netball League continued on Wednesday at the Leila Robinson Courts.

St Patrick's drubbed St George's 22-5 to complete their sixth consecutive win from as many matches. Mona, who squeezed out a close 10-9 win over St Benedict's on Monday, gained a walkover from St Martin de Porres for their seventh straight win to be sole leaders of Zone I.

St Patrick's shooters Shanique Francis and Hassana Williams dominated in the early stages as their team led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter. They continued to assert their authority as the match progressed to lead Zone 3 with maximum 18 points.

In other matches played on Wednesday, New Providence defeated Iris Gelly 15-6, Pembroke Hall stopped Balmagie 13-9, St Francis drubbed Seaview Gardens 18-4, Holy Family beat St Peter Claver 10-5, St Andrew defeated Denham Town 16-4 and Rollington Town clipped Tarrant 10-8.

Frazer's Whip held 0-0 by Pen Acres

Pen Acres became only the second team this season to take a point from hot team Frazer's Whip, as they held the reigning parish knockout champs 0-0 in a LIME St Catherine Division One match on Thursday.

Frazer's are leaders on 26 points, from 10 matches. They are well ahead way of second-place Treadways (17 points). Waterford were the first to draw with Frazer's. In another game, Portmore's Racing edged Travellers 2-1, with a double strike from Javal Nugent (6th, 74th). Dwayne Howell netted Travellers goal. Two games are scheduled for tomorrow. Treadways host Upfront United at Treadways field, and Invaders welcome Christian Pen at Pleasant Farm. All games begin at 3:30 p.m.

Westport face East Portmore

Leaders Westport (13 points) and fourth-place East Portmore Portals (seven points) clash in a key LIME-sponsored Portmore Division Two Football League fixture at the Passagefort field tomorrow, match time 1 p.m. Westport are coming off a 3-2 win over Braeton United last Sunday, while East Portmore were off on a bye.

In the second game at the venue, Queens Park oppose second-place Watson Grove (12 points) at 3 p.m.

Over at the Hellshire field, third-place Hellshire United (eight points) welcome last-place Daytona (one point).

Fort-Masterpiece showdown

Defending champs Fort International, fresh from their conquering of rivals Caribbean Classic (300-276) last Sunday, turn their attention to a showdown with second-place Masterpiece in the Jamaica Domino Federation-Charley's JB Rum-Supreme Ventures Portmore-St Catherine Domino League tomorrow.

Masterpiece saw their unbeaten run end, losing narrowly (300-299) at home against Right Stuff.

In other games, Westchester Nuckuz play Hurricane in Westchester; Garveymeade host Village Link; Lime Tree welcome Caymanas Track; Ackee Pod take on Correctional Services; Eradication entertain Triple X Old Harbour Bay at Gregory Park; Eagle View play at home against North Street United at Old Braeton main road; Passagefort United host Colours Sports Club at Myrtle Way, Old Passagefort; and Ken's Wildflower await Caribbean Classic at Portmore Plaza. All games begin at 11:30 a.m.

Church cricket, bigger and better

The Power of Faith Ministries Twenty20 Church Cricket League bowls off on Saturday, March 5, at Lime Tree Oval in St Catherine.

The league is getting bigger as a record 10 teams have confirmed participation thus far. There will be an important meeting for all teams interested in being part of the league on February 19, at the Power of Faith Ministries, starting at 3:30 p.m. The organisers have not yet got a title sponsor, but are still searching. In a new development this year, an over-40 team will participate.

Gregory Park, Naggo Head, 'Greats' score wins

Gregory Park, Naggo Head and Greater Portmore scored important wins in the LIME-INSPORT-sponsored Portmore Primary Schools' Football League at the Portsmouth field last Wednesday.

Zone Two team Gregory Park Primary snatched their second win in a row after they defeated Waterford 3-1 through goals from Raymond Foster (40th), Jhaun McKenzie (42nd), and Kimarley Fletcher (47th). Waterford's consolation goal came from their female player, Shanique Alison, on the stroke of full time.

In other games, Zone One favourite Naggo Head tagged Independence City 2-0 off Anthony Johnson (4th) and Dante Lindsay (53rd) goals. Naggo Head now have six points from two games, and will advance to the next round officially if they defeat Waterford in their next game.

In Zone One action, Greater Portmore jumped to six points after they edged Ascot 2-1 but Portsmouth were lucky to come away with a 1-1 draw as they were helped by an own-goal by Southborough in the dying minutes of the game.

St Catherine teams dominate Super League

The St Catherine domination of the South Central Confed Super League has started to take shape following results of last week's start for the cross-zone fixtures.

Five of the seven teams in the 12-team league dominate the top six places in the standings after six rounds. Three secured victories on the weekend, while the other four were involved in draws.

Rivoli held on to their two-point lead for the second straight week after beating Downs of Manchester 2-0 at their Monk Street home. Anthony Greenland (27th, 33rd) scored both goals. Defending champions Meadows held on to second place, after leaving it late against Mile Gully to win 2-0. De la Vega City were the third St Catherine team to secure a sixth-round win, edging fellow newcomers Newell 1-0 at Spanish Town Prison Oval.

Clarendon's Monymusk, who drew 0-0 with Newland, is the only team at the moment intercepting a clean sweep of the top places, as their nine points keep them at third place over Bodles, who have an inferior goal difference. Naggo Head are next on eight and De la Vega City (seven pts) rounding out the top six.

Matches slated for this weekend are: Today: Naggo Head vs Mile Gully and Downs vs New Bowens.

Sunday: Newell vs Bodles; Meadows vs De la Vega City; Tru-Juice vs Newland; and Monymusk vs Rivoli.

Clarendon Major League round-up

Gimmi-Me-Bit remain top of the Claro-Captain's Bakery Clarendon Major League. Next are Spartan Athletics and Woodhall FC, who are two points behind on 10, and Longwood, who follow on eight.

However, both Gimmi-Me-Bit and Spartan have played one match fewer. The two will be involved in this weekend's schedule as their games on Thursday were called off by the FA due to the hosting of the Jamaica vs Costa Rica U-17 game at Brancourt.

Gimmi-Me-Bit take on Freetown in the first game of a double-header at York Town Sports Complex. The home side then tackle Original Hazard at 3 p.m. Spartan FC will play their game at Clarendon College, facing Gayle.

In last weekend's games, Rock River defeated Freetown 2-1 and Woodhall edged York Town 1-0. Gimmi-Me-Bit won their fourth straight game, hammering Original Hazard 4-1 while Spartan drew 0-0 with Milk River.

Later in the week, Longwood turned back Rock River 2-0 while Milk River and Woodhall drew 2-2.

Manchester Major League

The exciting Porus team, with the league's leading goalscorer, Cleon Barrett, returns to this weekend's schedule of The Captain's Bakery-sponsored Manchester Major League, hosting Mandeville United tomorrow, a team yet to taste victory this season after five games.

Today's game will feature a clash between neighbours New Green and Young Diamonds. New Green made the biggest move last weekend, climbing to a top-three place after beating Star Liner on their home ground, 2-1. The anticipated clash between Kendal and Comfort lived up to expectations, ending in an exciting 2-2 draw.

In two other key matches slated for this weekend, Georges Valley host third-place Comfort (10 pts) today, while tomorrow, fourth-place Kendal journey to the NCU ground to face bottom-three team Star Liner.
