Glenmuir, Ardenne for finals

The finals of the urban and rural area National Schools Chess Championships will be held today at Ardenne High and Glenmuir High, respectively.

In the urban area final, which is slated to get under way at 10 a.m., the hosts, who are seeking their first hold on the title, will do battle with six-time champions Campion, while in the rural area equivalent, which is scheduled to start at 11a.m., Glenmuir and Manning's High will square off.

In last week's urban area semi-finals, which were held at Kingston College, Campion College, led by victories from Andrew Folkes and Sekani Boxhill on boards two and four, defeated Camperdown High 2.5 to 1.5 points in semi-final one while in semi-final two, Ardenne with wins from Jonathan Orgill and Horace Sinclair on boards two and three got the better of Wolmer's Boys, by a similar margin.

Camperdown's lone victory on the day came on board one after Roger Williams beat Campion's Douglas Johnson, while Wolmer's win came as a result of smart playing from Jonathan Pitterson on board four.

In the rural area equivalent, which was also played at Kingston College, Glenmuir's Andrew Ellis and Andre Nelson, operating on boards one and four respectively, recorded victories to guide the boys from Clarendon to a 2.5 to 1.5 win over St Jago.

Manning's booked their spot after outscoring defending champions St Catherine 2.5 to 1.5.

Leading the way for Manning's were Chayanne Sutherand and Andre Merritt on boards two and four, while Roxroy Roach drew on board 3 with St Catherine's Nathan Hinds.

Kyle Doctor on board one was the sole winner for St Catherine High.
