Churches take aim at communities
Judy Mowatt will be one of the headline acts at what is expected to be a massive gospel event tomorrow.
Put on by the St Luke's and St Philip's churches, the gospel extravaganza called 'The Cure' will be held on the lawns of King's House. It will include performances by DJ Nicholas, Omari, Sister Scully, Nexus, the Diocesan Choir, Ann Marie Laing, The Kencot Youth SDA Choir and Carlene Davis. George Nooks is expected to make a special guest appearance.
The St Luke's and St Philip's Anglican churches are located in the Cross Roads and Maxfield Avenue areas in the Corporate Area, respectively. Both churches have served in the communities for a combined sum of close to 100 years, and play an integral role in the life of these communities.
While the churches' relevance to these communities continues to be pivotal, the needs have grown exponentially.
To this end, the event aims at increasing and deepening the churches' involvement in the communities, through the implementation of additional projects and programmes, reactivation and enhancement of others.
The churches have a feeding programme for the less fortunate who reside mainly on the streets. Every Wednesday and alternate Friday a hot meal is served to approximately 200 persons.
The Cure is looking to increase the number of persons availing themselves of the facility and the number of days from two to three. The plan is also to work with the State and other organisations to address the lack of housing for these persons, as well as their health care.
