Jamaica teams tackle England, Newport in polo finale

The international polo series comes to a close at the Kingston Polo Club, Caymanas Estates, today with two Jamaican teams taking on England and the visiting Newport team from Rhode Island, in two separate matches. The first is set to start at 3 p.m.

One Jamaica team will oppose Newport in the first match for the Newport Bowl, while the second Jamaica team will take on England in their annual gallop for the John Tinsley Silver Salver.

England defeated Jamaica 9-3 last Sunday and should start favourites today. Their team of Tim Bown (captain), Tristen Pemble, Roy Trisk and Paul Knight has not only been been combining well, but finishing positively, which has netted them many goals in the matches they have played so far.

Likely to take the field again

Jamaica was represented by Paul Lalor (captain), Mark Melville, Jonathan Dougall and Rachel Turner, who are likely to take the field once again.

In their first match on Saturday, February 26, at Caymanas Estates, England defeated a Kingston Polo Club team captained by Mining and Energy Minister James Robertson, 4-1, with Bown and Trisk scoring twice. Robertson converted twice for the losers.

On Thursday at Chukka Blue in Hanover, two mixed teams comprising Jamaican and Newport players finished in an exciting 3-3 tie.

The Landrover team saw Newport players Leonard Nihan and Heather Rasulis pairing with local players John G. Byles and Jordon Samuda, while the Audi team comprised the Jamaicans Paul Chin and Sam Wates playing alongside the father-and-son pair of Dennis and Jonas Mikolichy from Newport.

Sponsors for the series of matches, including one at the St Ann Polo Club in Drax Hall, are The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, Audi and Landrover and J. Wray & Nephew's Delicato Wines.
