Benfica tame Lion

Benfica stunned home team Humble Lion 2-0 in their Effortville den yesterday, as they look to avoid the dreaded drop from the Digicel Premier League in a month's time.

Mark Thomas booted home a penalty in the 26th minute for a 1-0 lead that kept the pressure on the home-side until the 87th minute when they were finally broken for good, when Damion James dismissed two makers to hit past goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers at his near-post.

Benfica's win could not have been more timely, since at the start of the game, the two were locked on 33 points with the St Ann side having the inferior goal difference. Even with two matches to go to close competition in this round, the two are already sure to be playing in the precariously positioned bottom six, a group from which the two relegation candidates will come.
