• Robert McKen wins Sistas singles title

Eagles' representative Robert McKen won the Sistas singles championship for the sixth time last Sunday, defeating another former champion, Fitzroy 'Paul' Blair, of Eastern All-Stars 3-0 in the final at Willies Skittles Club, Three Miles Plaza.

McKen, who is popularly called 'Dave' and 'Worldman', had previously won singles titles while playing for a number of other clubs, including three with Rowe's Strikers, as well as Jackson's Strikers and Cherry's Strikers. He beat Blair 1340-1170, 1200-1090 and 2080-1200.

McKen defeated his Eagles teammate Emmanuel Munda 2-1 in a disputed semi-final which saw Munda refusing to play after three games, thus forfeiting the match. In the other semi-final, Blair clipped his Eastern All-Stars teammate Keita Stephens 3-2 after both players were locked at 2-2 going into the fifth and final game.

Having reached the final, McKen said he was confident of winning, even though Blair, a two-time champion, was a formidable opponent. Both players met in a previous final at the RJR Sports Club some 15 years ago and McKen won that encounter.

For his efforts, McKen, who has never lost a final, secured $50,000 and the Sistas championship trophy donated by sponsors Henkel, while Blair took home $25,000 and Stephens $15,000 for third.

In the ladies' singles final, Marsha Newsome from Starliner defeated Charlene Phoenix from Eastern All-Stars 2-0 in the final 1580-0750, 0500-nil.

Phoenix had earlier beaten Paulette Barrett from Eagles 2-0 to reach the final.

The awards presentation function will take place on Wednesday, March 23, at the Mystix Sports Bar, 78 ³/⁴ Hagley Park Road, starting at 7 p.m.

• Hot Shots pools tourney

Ewart Hall and André Meeks, prominent pools players and members of Hot Shots Pools Bar, 103 Constant Spring Road, stage an open eight-ball tournament at Hot Shots today and tomorrow, starting at 2 p.m. both days. The two-day tournament offers a first prize of $50,000 and trophy, second $20,000 and trophy and third $5,000.

Entry fee is $2,000, re-entry $1,500.

• Masterpiece, Caribbean Classic in heavyweight battle

Heavyweights Caribbean Classic and Masterpiece clash in a feature game of the 13th round in Jamaica Domino Federation/Charley's JB Overproof Rum/Supreme Ventures Portmore/St Catherine League match at Old Harbour Road tomorrow.

Masterpiece, who are joint leaders with Eagle View with 42 points, had a walkover against Caymanas Track last Sunday, and will be well rested as they entertain former champions Classic, currently tied for third with 40 points, with former leaders Right Stuff. Classic dispatched Colours Sports Bar 300-272 in their last outing, and this game can go either way.

In other games, Right Stuff, who suffered their first loss of the season, play away to Eradication in Gregory Park, Ackee Pod host Hurricane, Garveymeade are at home against Triple X Old Harbour Bay, North Street United oppose red-hot Fort International in Old Harbour, Westchester Nuckuz welcome Colours Sports Bar, Ken's Wildflower entertain Lime Tree Grove at Portmore Plaza, in Bayside, Passagefort United oppose Village Link at Myrtle Way, and Correctional Services oppose Caymanas Track at Prison Oval.

All matches begin 11:30 a.m.

• Watson Grove hope to maintain lead

Watson Grove (19 points) hope to maintain their slim lead over nemesis Westport (18) as they play against third-place Hellshire United (12), in a feature match in a Lime Portmore Division Two football league at Ferdie Neita Park tomorrow. Match time is 3 p.m.

In the opening game at the venue, second-to-last Braeton United oppose fourth-place East Portmore Portals, while at the Passagefort field, bottom-club Daytona will attempt their first win of the season against fifth-place Queen's Park at 3 p.m.

• Power of Faith Twenty/20

Two matches are scheduled today in the second week of the Power of Faith Ministries Twenty/20 Church Cricket League at Lime Tree Oval in St Catherine.

Local-based team Portmore Gospel Assembly clash with the Seniors (an over-40 team) in the opening game of a double-header at 9:30 a.m. In the second game at 1:30 in the afternoon, Miracle Open Bible oppose Power and Light Ministries.

In matches last Saturday, Power of International, formerly Power of Faith Seniors, through a wonderful 74 not out by Glen Wellington, knocked off newcomers Gregory Park New Testament by 133 runs, while, another newcomer, Elim/Victory Open Bible, surprised last year's beaten finalists Old Harbour New Testament, winning by three wickets. Batsman Shavoni Spauldings top-scored with 39 runs.

• Wanderers shock Black Lion 2-1

Eighth-place Wanderers FC (20 points) created one of two upsets in last week's round of matches in the LIME St Catherine FA Major League after they clipped leaders Black Lion 2-1 at the Passagefort field. Delroy Small's double strike in the 84th and 89th minutes did the job for the Portmore side, while Damarley Dawkins (35th) scored for Black Lion.

Despite the loss, Black Lion still lead the table, but their advantage was cut to six points, as second-place Portsmouth (32 points) avoided the weekend jinx as they got past Dunbeholden 2-1. Kevin Williams scored both goals for the winners.

The second upset was DB Basovak's 2-1 win over semi-final hopefuls Spanish Police. Royal Lakes made good use of Spanish Town Police's slip-up and moved to third on 30 points as they drubbed Cumberland 4-1. Kenroy Howell struck a brace (10th, 20th) while Omar Tate (36th) and Orville Mullings (69th) also scored. Okama Scott (72nd), netted for Cumberland. In another game, Rodwood and Albion drew 1-1.

• Rivoli regain lead in Super League

The second stage of the preliminary round of the South Central Confed Super League will be completed this weekend with the playing of the final set of cross-zone matches in the football competition.

Six matches are on this weekend. Today: Naggo Head vs Rivoli; Downs vs Bodles. Tomorrow: Newell vs Newland; Meadows vs New Bowens; Naggo Head vs Rivoli; Tru-Juice vs De la Vega.

Last weekend was significant in that Rivoli of St Catherine regained the overall lead in the South Central Confed Super League with a 2-0 win over Tru-Juice They moved to 23 points, two more than Meadows, who lost ground after being held to a 1-1 draw by Newlands.

Clarendon's Monymusk stayed strong in third on19, with Downs of Manchester and New Bowens of Clarendon both on 13.

Luke Soares, who was the architect of Rivoli's seventh win in 10 games, scored two goals mid-way the first half. In other results at the weekend, Monymusk defeated Bodles 2-1, parishmates New Bowens defeated Newell 2-0 in the battle of newcomers, while Downs and Mile Gully end 1-1 in their Manchester derby. The De la Vega vs Naggo Head encounter was postponed.

• Gimme-Me-Bit, Spartan in mid-season final

Leaders Gimme-Me-Bit and second-place Spartan Athletic will contest today's mid-season final Claro/Captain's Bakery Clarendon Major League football competition.

The game will be played at the Jamalco Sports Club with starting time of 3:30 p.m. The winners will take home $30,000.

However, the final will be preceded by the start of the Division One competition, sponsored by Claro.

Gimme-Me-Bit finished the first half of the league format with 24 points out of a possible 27 points. Their only blemish came in their penultimate game when they were beaten by York Town, a team in the bottom half of the standings. They have scored eight wins, including one over today's opponents.

Spartan ended on 20 points, winning six games, drawing two and losing once. They are followed by Woodhall on 17. In results from the last set of games, bottom-place Gayle upset York Town 1-0, Freetown outscored Original Hazard 3-0, Woodhall edged Rock River 2-1, while Longwood and Milk River drew 0-0.

Super Action lead in St Elizabeth

Odane Salmon's 65th-minute goal was good enough for Super Action to defeat Tafari Lions in their top-of-the-table clash last weekend and retain the lead in the J. Wray & Nephew-sponsored St Elizabeth Major League football competition.

Super Action moves to 34 points, and have now booked a place in the mid-season final with two rounds remaining. However, the most significant move from last weekend's round was made by Appleton Estate's team. After handing the leaders an emphatic 3-1 win the previous week, Appleton turned the heat on Treasure Beach to win 3-0. The good patch of form pushed them to 27 points and, more important, second place.

Both Tafari Lions and Black River lost ground after suffering defeat. Black River's 2-1 loss to Braes River has seen them slipped to fourth, from a high of occupying second position two weeks ago. In other results, Burnt Ground toppled New Holland 1-0 while Mountainside achieved the same over Young Brazil.

Games on this weekend: Today - Young Brazil vs Black River in Santa Cruz; Braes River vs Burnt Ground; and Mountainside vs New Holland. Tomorrow - Vineyard vs Super Action; Appleton vs Tafari Lions; and Treasure Beach vs Parottee.

• St Elizabeth Co-op Credit Union Division One

The going is close in both zones of the 2011 St Elizabeth Co-op Credit Union Division One football competition.

Northampton continue to hold the lead in Zone A with 10 points, followed by Black River Young Strikers on seven and Round Hill six. In Zone B, Rocky Hill hold a point on Knoxwood and Haughton, who are both locked on eight points.

In last week's round of matches, Black River Young Strikers defeated Middle Quarters 2-1, while Round Hill and Retrieve drew 0-0.

In Zone B, Knoxwood produced the highest margin of victory, outclassing Prospect 5-1, while Rocky Hill edged Haughton 2-1 in what was a top-of-the-table clash.

• Hill Stars, New Green in Manchester mid-season final

Brook's Park will host tomorrow's Captain's Bakery Manchester Major League mid-season final between leaders New Green and Hill Stars. Start time is 3:30 p.m. Activities will, however, begin at 1:30 p.m. when Clandon Strikers take on Hopewell in the start of the Power Services-sponsored Division Two football competition.

That competition continues next Thursday with Gully Strikers of Cobbla hosting Lyndhurst at the Cobbla training camp.

The excitement will naturally surround the mid-season final where the contest features two former champions - both smarting from relegation from the South Central Confed Super League last season.

Both teams booked their spot with wins in the final round. New Green defeated Porus 1-0 at their Brook's Park home venue while Hill Stars got the better of Comfort 2-1. New Green topped the standings on 18 points while both Hill Stars and Porus finished on16 points, with the latter having an inferior goal difference.

The rest of the standings reads: Kendal fourth on 12 points, the pair of Comfort and Georges Valley follow on 11, Young Diamonds 10, and Starliner 8. Mandeville United are yet to score a point after eight games.
