Gov't seeks safer source of energy
Manila, Philippines (AP):
President Benigno Aquino III has rejected the use of nuclear energy in the Philippines in the near future, due to safety concerns which have been reinforced by Japan's nuclear crisis.
Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said yesterday that the unfolding crisis involving Japan's quake- and tsunami-ravaged nuclear plants has prompted Aquino to prioritise the development of non-nuclear sources of energy.
The energy department has been studying the possibility of developing nuclear energy amid steep oil price hikes and problems that threaten supply.
Some businessmen have urged officials to consider using a nuclear plant that was completed in Bataan province near Manila during dictator Ferdinand Marcos's time, but was never operated due to safety issues.
