Junior golfers tee off

Jamaica's top junior golfers will display their shot-making skills for a place on the national team today and tomorrow. Just under 30 youngsters will vie for 14 spots in six categories - under-13 boys and girls, under-15 boys and girls and under-17 boys and girls.

Competition will be fierce in the under-17 boys section among players including Jonathan Newnham, Ian Facey, William Knibbs and Zachary Chong. In the under-15 boys, Michael Wilmot comes to the event from a category win in the recent Herman McDonald Memorial Event.

Jordan Lowe (under-13 boys) was the only junior winner in that tournament who has not yet made the national side. Sherisse Walker is expected to make a good showing in the under-15 girls, while Danielle Morris should produce competitive scores in the under-13 segment.

rigorous training

Coach Jason Lopez noted that the squad has gone through rigorous training leading up to the trials. He expects that the team, when chosen, will be the strongest to represent Jamaica in recent times. The Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships will be played in Barbados during the first week of July.

This year's crop of team hopefuls has emerged from the junior golf programmes affiliated with the Sandals Golf & Country Club, SuperClubs Golf Club, Cinnamon Hill Golf Club and the Swing Solutions School of Golf in Kingston.

The trials will take place today at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club, starting at 10 a.m., and tomorrow at the Constant Spring Golf Club.
