Briggs, Rashid bowl Lions to resounding victory

ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC):

Danny Briggs and Adil Rashid spun the England Lions to a comprehensive 258-run victory over Windward Islands in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Four-day Tournament yesterday.

Briggs collected six wickets for 45 runs from 23 overs and Rashid captured four for 19 from 14.4 overs as Windwards, set 356 for victory, were dismissed for 97 on the final day of their sixth round match at Windsor Park.

Rashid formalised the result when he bowled Mervin Matthew for the top score of 25 about half-hour after the lunch interval.

No other Windwards batsman passed 20 as the home team continued their trend this season of shambolic batting in the second innings, to hand the Lions only their second victory of the competition.

RESULT MEANING

The result meant that the Lions earned 12 points and move to 48, while the Windwards remained on 29.

Windwards started the day on 10 for two, and there was never a hint of what was to transpire, when Andre Fletcher and Keddy Lesporis steadily batted through the first half-hour.

Once Briggs removed them both, there was little resistance from the rest of the Windwards batting and they subsided to 69 for eight at lunch. After the interval, Matthew and Nelon Pascal put up a little resistance before Rashid removed both of them to bring the innings to a close.

Pedro Collins spurred Barbados to a dramatic six-wicket victory over Leeward Islands with a memorable hat-trick yesterday.

Collins removed opener Gavin Williams, Leewards captain Steve Liburd and newcomer Kerry Mentore in successive balls, as Leewards, leading by 26 on first innings, were dismissed for 82 in their second innings, about half-hour after the lunch interval on the third day of their sixth round match.

The Barbados left-arm fast-medium bowler finished with three wickets for 15 from seven overs and had to share centre stage with hometown boy Justin Athanaze.

The off-spinner had a notable day with the ball. He took two of the last three Barbados wickets with successive balls and ended with five for 58 from 27 overs in the visitors' first innings total of 251.

The result meant that Barbados earned 12 points and moved to 27, while the Leewards gained four points and moved to 19.

Jason Peters led the way for Leewards with 23, but no other batsman on the home team passed 20, as Ryan Hinds, the Barbados captain, bowling left-arm spin, joined in the demolition with two for 15 from 4.2 overs and Tino Best took two for 26 from five overs.

At the Three Ws Oval: Guyana, chasing 200 for victory, reached 30 for one in their second innings at the close on the third day of their sixth round match against Combined Campuses & Colleges yesterday.
