Persons in Hanover did not mind sailing on the melodious tunes of veteran reggae musician Freddie McGregor, who gave an astounding performance in Hopewell, Hanover, over the weekend that was testament to his iconic status.
Premium entertainment, under the guise of Heineken Retro Vibes at the Peeplz Bar and Restaurant, gave patrons an opportunity to see this renowned musician for the first in a long while.
While McGregor mentioned that he had the flu, his 30-minute performance was nothing short of musical brilliance and excellence, that showed no signs of illness.
With songs like Push Come to Shove and Just Don't Want to Be Lonely, McGregor has become accustomed to singalongs and the patrons were no different in Hanover as they sang every song he performed word for word, in most instances he had to do them twice.
His smooth style of delivery and his diversity was executed well when he did Never Change, by his son Chino, and Nah Friend Again, by Stephen McGregor, to a resounding applause from the capacity-filled venue.
According to Clayton Campbell, owner of Peeplz Bar and Restaurant and the promoter of Heineken Retro Vibes, the event sought to celebrate and honour the best of Jamaica's music from the past and McGregor personifies what the concept was about.
Reggae icon
"Freddie McGregor is an icon and he epitomizes what reggae is all about and what the concept of this event was. We are pleased that he could make it and give the people of Hanover a wonderful show that, I am sure, they will never forget. This is just one of many events that we plan on hosting each month at the location and foster a great vibe that locals and tourists alike can come and be apart of," he revealed.
As for Freddie McGregor who was recently honoured by The STAR for over four decades in music, going to the parish of Hanover was a welcome change to spread the music outside of the activities in Kingston.
"It is good to do something outside of Kingston and I definitely love the vibe and the people; and I appreciate them embracing me with so much love," the reggae star expressed.
