Cariah spins T&T to emphatic victory

PROVIDENCE, Guyana (CMC):

Yannic Cariah came of age when he bowled Trinidad & Tobago to an innings and 45-run victory over Guyana, in the WICB Regional Four-day Tournament yesterday.

The 18-year-old leg-spinner, playing in only his fourth match, snared five wickets for 46 runs from 14 overs, as Guyana were dismissed for 173 in their second innings, about 20 minutes past the scheduled close on the third day of their seventh round match at the Guyana National Stadium.

Fellow leg-spinner Imran Khan supported with four for 45 from 19.1 overs to finish the match with eight for 111, after Guyana gave another spineless batting performance.

Leon Johnson hit the top score for Guyana of 48, his captain Assad Fudadin supported with 30 and Rajindra Chandrika made 24.

Khan formalised the result for T&T when he had Brandon Bess caught at mid-on for 18, after the visitors claimed an extra half-hour in the hope of finishing things off, when the Guyanese slid to 145 for eight just before the scheduled close.

The result meant that T&T gained 12 points to finish the preliminary competition on 52 and take second place behind the Combined Campuses & Colleges.

The victory also gave them the right to host one of the semi-finals, starting on Friday, when their opponents will be three-time defending champions Jamaica.

Guyana earned no points and slumped to their fourth defeat to end another disappointing season at the foot of the ladder.
