SUPERSTAR made it two wins from two starts in the 2010-11 Hanover Football Association Captain's Bakery & Grill Major League football competition last weekend when a double strike by Roydel Moncrieffe gave them a 2-1 win against Jericho Rangers at Elgin Town.
By virtue of their win, the Superstar aggregation, which started the season with a 1-0 win against Logwood FC, moved up to six points making them sole leaders of the eight-team competition.
In what was a closely contested game, the wily Moncrieffe, who is a former Rusea's High School daCosta Cup star, opened the scoring in the 40th minute.
Four minutes later, he added a second goal to give Superstar a 2-0 half-time cushion.
Carlington McFarlane got Jericho Rangers' lone goal in the 78th minute.
In the second of the two games that were played on Saturday, Logwood rebounded from their first-round loss to Superstar with a 1-0 win against Sandy Bay.
Opponents at bay
Logwood took the lead in the fourth minute through Dave McFarlane and then held their fancied opponents at bay for the next 86 minutes, to seal victory.
On Sunday, Haddington FC moved into second place, after scoring a hard-fought 2-1 win against Galaxy FC. The win lifted the Haddington team to four points, as they had secured a point in their first round 0-0 draw against Haughton Courts.
After battling away to a 0-0 stalemate in the first half, Haddington took the lead when Conroy Reid struck in the 50th minute to make the score 1-0. Galaxy stormed back four minutes later when Deian Drysdale struck to make the half-time score 1-1.
Haddington made sure they would take home all three points in the 80th minute, when the reliable Reid struck for a second time in the 80th minute making the final score 2-1.
In the second game on Sunday, the Lucea FC team, which drew 0-0 with Jericho Rangers in the season's opening game, battled to a 1-1 draw against Haughton Meadows. Interestingly, Haughton Meadows also drew their first game.
In what was a keenly contested game, Haughton Meadows took the lead in the 67th minute through Keino Williams. However, Lucea FC secured a share of the points through an 86th-minute strike by Ramon 'Blue' Foster.
The competition, which is being played in a three-round format, is sponsored to the tune of $1.2m. The winning team will take home the Captain's Bakery & Grill Trophy and $100,000.
