Barbadian misbehaviour

Published:Thursday | March 31, 2011 | 12:00 AM

By now, the government of Barbados, in particular its foreign minister, Ms Maxine McClean, should have been convinced of the inappropriateness of this quick-fire dismisssal of the claim by a Jamaican woman, Shanique Myrie, of being degradingly searched at the Grantley Adams Airport before being deported.

Ms McClean appeared to give utmost authority to the assertion by her country's immigration officials after what, given the time it took, could only have been a cursory investigation, that the incident never happened and that the complaint was mere fabrication.

It is good that Ms McClean and her jamaican counterpart, Dr Ken Baugh, will discuss the matter in the margins of a Caribbean Community (Caricom) foreign ministers conference.

Hopefully, on reflection, Bridgetown will adjust its attitude on the matter, for Barbados deserves better than the crassness of the reported action.
