Real Madrid golf tourney in MoBay today

WESTERN BUREAU:Local golf enthusiasts and visitors to the island with a penchant for the sport, will have a wonderful opportunity to showcase their talent today when the scenic Cinnamon Hill Golf Course in Montego Bay, plays host to the Real Madrid Football School Programme Golf Tournament.

The event, which has been generating a fair amount of interest locally, especially among amateur golfers in western Jamaica, will tee off at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start, which is the format used to allow competing teams to start at different holes so as ensure that the tournament is finished within a designated time.

Based on the entry fee, which will see locals paying US$100 and hotel guests US$250, the organisers are expecting a phenomenal turnout. The entry fee includes a continental breakfast, on-course hors d'oeuvres and lunch, a caddy and golf cart.

"Everything will be in place so all the players need to do is to show up ready to give a good account of themselves on one of the best golf courses in the world," a release from the organisers stated. "We are expecting a fantastic tournament."

All proceeds from the tournament will go towards the expansion programme at Real Madrid Football School for Social Integration, which is the brainchild of Rose Hall Developments Limited and the Real Madrid Foundation.

The Spanish-Jamaica-linked foundation, which played an integral role when the Real Madrid Football School was established in April 2010, has given its blessing for today's tournament, which is expected to attract several local celebrities.

According to the organisers, each team will feature four players contesting the 3/4 handicap format, which means that each player will compete at a level they have mastered.

While the monies generated from the tournament will go to the Real Madrid School, the successful golfers in today's tournament will also be in for attractive prizes, including weekend packages for top-flight hotels such as Secrets, Bahia Principe, Grand Palladium, RIU Hotels, as well as dinner for two at top restaurants in western Jamaica.

The Real Madrid School currently provides training for 30 to 50 boys and girls between six and 12 years old, and is temporarily operating on lands adjoining the Hilton Rose Hall hotel in Montego Bay. The school is managed by former Reggae Boyz goalkeeper, Aaron Lawrence.
