Gatorade honours Gibson Relays record breakers

Athletes who had set new records at this year's Gibson Relays were last week honoured and presented with cash prizes during the Gatorade Athletic Excellence Awards Ceremony at the Red Stripe Sports Club on Spanish Town Road.

The record breakers were presented with $80,000 cheques under the Gatorade Record Breakers programme set up to encourage excellence in national athletics in an effort to continue Jamaica's heritage of outstanding athletic performances. John Mills All-Age and Junior High were responsible for two of the records set on the day.

The athletes will be paid from the Gatorade Record Breakers prize pool of $800,000.

The outstanding athletes who shone most brightly at the March 12 Gibson Relays were Jamaica College's 4x100 Class III Boys, who set a new record of 43.38 seconds; John Mills All-Age and Junior High Boys' 4x100 metre relay team (44.42s); Holmwood Technical's Under-15 Girls 4x100m team (45.77s); Ocho Rios Masters Men (44.40s); John Mills All-Age and Junior High 4x200m (1:33.88); Swept Track Club Sprint Medley for Clubs and Institutions (3:19.44); Winston Barnes (UTech), 100 metres men (10.17s); Shawn Pitter, Mile Men (4:11.30); Tanice Barnett (MVP), Mile Women (4.57.21); and Andre Parchment (UWI), 110m Hurdles Men (14.09s).

According to Carlo Redwood, head of marketing at Pepsi Cola Jamaica, distributors of Gatorade, this is Gatorade's way of extending congratulations and imparting motivation.

"The programme recognises that outstanding performances are the result of hard work and dedication of athletes and coaches who persevere through difficult training and financial conditions," said Redwood.
