'Ugly' win irks Maxwell

BUFF BAY, Portland:

Despite his team's two-nil victory over visiting Reno, head coach of St Georges Sports Club, Geoffrey Maxwell, left Lynch Park in Portland on Sunday disappointed at the lacklustre approach of his players.

"This is arguably the worst game for my team," said Maxwell. "The guys failed to play to instructions, which makes us look ugly at times.

"Yes, we created various opportunities and secured all three points, but the flair was missing. We are creating more chances now than ever before, but I still think we should score more goals. The plan is to win all games in this final round so as to stay ahead of our nearest rivals," he added.

Prolific striker Richardo Watson opened the scoring for Georges in the 28th minute with a header off a well taken free kick from captain Girvon Brown.

Brown curled a right-footed free kick from the right side of the field, just outside Reno's 18 yard-box, and Watson, who was left unmarked, headed past the goalkeeper for a one nil-lead.

It wasn't long after that the home team went further ahead through Bobby-Joe Huie who was picked out by Dwayne Holmes with a curling free kick in the 40th minute. The ball was served on the edge of the six-yard box and found Huie lurking. He fired home from close range to give Georges a 2-0 lead.

The second half was pretty much the same story, and Georges should have scored a third and a fourth, but the easier of the two came in the 73rd minute when Romeo Parkes got by two players and picked out substitute Damion Harwood, who had replaced the injured Watson. However, Harwood's tame effort was blocked by the goalkeeper.

With the clock ticking away, Reno got a chance to pull back a goal in the 78th minute, when Sheldon Bryan's cross was met by a header from Craig Foster which left goalkeeper Randal Huie beaten. However, the ball hit the upright.

Reno's assistant coach, Michael Graham, said: "We now have to dig deep. Our last three games will be critical, but it is important to note that we will have home advantage.

"Our next game is against Benfica and we will win that one. Reno belong in the Premier League," he stated.
