Jamaica's Burke tops them

Top Jamaican tennis player, Brandon Burke, has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Year in the United States following a vote by the league's eight head coaches.

A freshman at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, Burke has also been named in the second team All-Ivy in both singles and doubles, a report on the university's official website said. The Ivy League is a prestigious athletic conference in the North-eastern United States.

Burke is just the second Brown men's tennis player to ever be named Rookie of the Year, joining 2004 winner Jamie Cerretani. Cerretani has since enjoyed a successful professional career and is currently ranked No. 72 on the ATP doubles tour.

During the tennis season, Burke compiled a 19-12 overall singles record, going 11-8 in dual matches, including a 5-2 mark in the Ivy League split between No. 2 and No. 3. Burke also went 19-11 in doubles action, pairing with Soufiane Azargui to post a 12-7 record at No. 1 doubles, including a 3-3 mark in the Ivy League.

Burke, 18, comes from a family of tennis players, as his mother, Ann-Marie, had success at the local level, while his father, Douglas, has played Davis Cup for Jamaica and the Caribbean and has had success on the professional ATP tour. Douglas Burke, long-time technical director of Tennis Jamaica, recently indicated that he wished to move on to pursue personal interests.
