Lady Alison wins 2-y-o feature

LADY ALISON, running as the even-money favourite with five-time champion jockey Trevor Simpson aboard, romped the season's first two-year-old race for the Starters' Trophy over 400 metres straight at Caymanas Park yesterday, to continue the splendid form of 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny.

Breaking smartly from the number three post position, LADY ALISON led from the 5-2 third favourite I'M ALWRIGHT and quickly established a clear lead passing the furlong pole to win by 11/2 lengths from IM ALWRIGHT in a field of nine native bred two-year-olds.

The well-backed second favourite EXO-TIC GOLD (8-5) ran below expectations to finish seventh, with Georgina Sergeon riding for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta.

A chestnut filly by Traditional out of Silver Pen, LADY ALISON covered the distance in 23.4 to equal the 2-y-o track record held jointly by MASTERPIECE (1998) and DOUBLE RALLY (2005).

Having posted a triple on Saturday, including CARIDAD in the Bigga Oaks over 2000 metres, Feanny, the leading all-time trainer in Jamaica with over 1,800 winners, duly notched his fourth win in two racedays and his 13th of the season to be fourth in the standings with $8.3 million.

Later in the afternoon, VON-ALMIGHTY, running at the surprisingly long odds of 10-1 with cham-pion jockey Omar Walker aboard, stormed through in the last furlong to win the 3-y-o and up overnight allowance race over 1600m by 21/2 lengths.

The race was run in muddy conditions caused by mid-afternoon showers and VONALMIGHTY, who loves the underfoot conditions, came from some way off the pace to sweep past OASIS (5-1) leaving the furlong pole to beat him convincingly (eased).

The howling 1-2 favourite BURST OF ENERGY, who was dropped in class to contest this race, found himself outpaced by the leaders OASIS and EXCELLENCE in the backstretch and plodded home a poor sixth, apparently disliking the muddy conditions.

VONALMIGHTY is co-owned by Richard Azan and Von White, and trained by Azan.

Leading jockey Shane Ellis, second-place Dick Cardenas and fifth-place Paul 'Country' Francis rode two winners each.
