Dewar claims six against Melbourne

Leg-spinner Akeem Dewar yesterday demonstrated why he is rated as one the best young spinners in the country, when he claimed impressive figures of six for 60 to guide Kensington to first innings honours over Melbourne, in the feature game of opening round of the 2011 two-day Jamaica Cricket Association Senior Cup.

The 19-year-old, who earlier this year made his debut for Jamaica at the regional senior level, was in peak form as Melbourne, chasing Kensington's modest first innings total of 241, were bowled out for 178.

Left-arm spinner, Ryan Francis, with three for 44, gave Dewar best support.

Kensington, batting a second time, were then dismissed for 213, before stumps were drawn.

Yannick Elliot, 84, leg-spinning all-rounder Damion Jacobs, 31, and West Indies spinner Nikita Miller, 24 not out, made the most runs for Melbourne.

"It feels good to get a winning start," said Kensington captain Wavell Hinds, whose 72 laid the foundation for his team's total.

"We, however, don't plan to read too much into the result as it is still the beginning of the season and most teams are just getting into the groove. But it was a good result for our young team and the hope is that we build on it," he added.

In addition to Hinds, Kensington's score was built around 40 from Anthony Wadsworth and 24 from Ranville Brown against Miller, three for 42.

Francis, 44, then topscored for Kensington during their second turn at bat, with Jacobs taking five for 71.

"A bit of indecision on the latter part of the opening day when we lost three quick wickets to end the day on 61 for six cost us the game," said Melbourne's acting manager, Shacurie Wilson.

"But it was good to see Elliot showing in good form and bringing us close to the score. We will just have to bounce back in our next games, especially given the fact that only one team will advance from the group."
