Principals gleeful

Acting Principal of Irwin High School, Heida Cooke-Benjamin, hailed the launching of the VCB Foundation as "one of the most significant gestures in the seven-year history of the school".

Olympic gold medallist, Veronica Campbell-Brown, launched her new charity yesterday at Terra Nova Hotel, Kingston, with a performance from gospel artiste Judy Mowatt.

The charity, which is aimed towards underprivileged female students and promoting female equality, will offer assistance to four schools - St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), Trelawny-based Troy High, Irwin High and Campbell Brown's alma mater, Vere Technical High.

The principals of STATHS and Irwin High were present at the event and expressed glee in having their schools being chosen for the charity.

"To have it come from someone so powerful, so special and so illustrious and for Irwin to be one of the first schools chosen initially, I think it is more than an honour, especially now when our young girls are faced with so many obstacles and challenges," said Benjamin.

"I think it is one of the best ideas that could ever be put forward," she added.

Curline Christie, principal of STATHS, echoed similar sentiments.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be counted among the set of schools selected for this charity, especially since it's the year of our 50th anniversary," said Christie.

"This a wonderful gift for a female student, particularly in today's world where there are challenges for female students. In addition, coming from an exemplary person like Veronica, it couldn't be more fitting."
