NOTEWORTHY

  • Blabbermouth Beckles

Hilary Beckles, in his pronouncements on Christopher Gayle as don, forgot one theory: that of Gramsci, in which a social group dominates another because of its silent consent.

Speaking for the power bloc, Beckles has dissed a Jamaican. I am not prepared for him, in his ivory tower, to make disparaging remarks under the guise of academic analogy.

  • Shaw needs to do more

Wednesday's presentation by Finance Minister Audley Shaw is a good start, but more can be done. Get the GCT rate down to 10 per cent and cap it at that figure. Also, get the corporate tax rate down to 15-20 per cent. This is what the Government should have done back in 2008 when the country was in recession.

  • Tax cuts to spur growth

While I am not a fan of either political party, I believe the tax cuts are a good thing. Lower taxes will spur consumption and growth. This has been in the pipeline for years. Jamaicans should be thankful instead of looking at through orange lenses.

  • Election Gimmick

The Government has deficits with the current taxes in place, hence, when they provide these tax cuts, will the deficit increase?

Common sense: you can't be earning $10 and be spending $14! It is just not sustainable. I'm not against tax cuts, but if this is not done properly, later on in the year we will hear of a shortfall. Then we will suffer a major tax increase - right after the election, I presume.
