Jones is new boxing board president

The Jamaica Boxing Board of Control (JBBC) has a new president.

He is 41-year-old businessman, Stephen 'Bomber' Jones, managing director of the Alma Jones Medical Centre.

Jones, who is the former first vice-president of the board, takes over from William Tavares- Finson, who after two terms as president, did not seek re-election at the annual general meeting of the Jamaica Boxing Association, that was held in the conference room of the Sports Development Foundation last Thursday evening.

In handing over to his successor, Tavares-Finson pledged to continue to work with the new administration, so as to ensure that the successes achieved in the sport locally in recent months will continue.

Very happy

Jones said that he was happy to have been given the honour to be president of an organisation with such a rich history and which has had so many brilliant presidents in the past, including National Hero Norman Manley.

He said that he was happy to have a very balanced and experienced team to work with and said further that in his eyes, the sport of boxing was going to have some great moments in the near future.

A fight card on June 16, featuring Jamaica's Fedelatin Champion Nicholas Walters - who will be going up against Argel Salinas from Mexico in his third title defence - will be the board's first assignment.

The other members of the board are: Alexander Johnson, first vice-president, Derek Robinson, second vice-president, Leroy Brown, general secretary, Doreen Brown assistant general secretary, Alastair Macbeath, treasurer and members Wallace Campbell, Keith Brown, Kingsley Goodison, Sonia Jackson, Justin Robinson and Luke Irons.
