Burrowes and Levy win big

Veteran players Warren Burrowes and Joey Levy defeated Michael Fennell, Jr and Noel McKrieth to win the inaugural Xsomo Doubles Squash Tournament which was held at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Saturday.

In a keenly contested match, Burrowes and Levy beat Fennell and McKrieth 11-10, 10-11, 11-6 to etch their names on the newly minted trophy. The victory is another notch on the belt for the duo who, along with Wayne Burrowes, took the title at the KPMG Squash League in March.

Rod Sims and Patrick Chin rounded out the top three, when they scored an 11-10, 11-9 win over Lawrence and Dave Morrison to take third place.

The one-day tournament, which is the only doubles championship on this year's squash calendar, was contested by several of the country's top players.

Among the contenders were All Jamaica Under-15 and Under-17 Girl's Champion, Mary Mahfood, 11-time All Jamaica Women's Champion Karen Anderson and junior team stars All Jamaica Under-17 Champion, Julian Morrison and All Jamaica Under-15 Champion, Jake Mahfood.

Twelve teams played in groups of three for the round robin leg of the competition, with the best team from each group progressing to the semi-finals.

Burrowes and Levy got past Mahfood and Morrison and Kyle Chin and Douglas Beckford to set up a semi-final match with Sims and Chin. While Fennell and McKrieth got through to the semi-finals on a count back of the number of games won as each team in their group - which included Robert and Geoff Roper and Ashante and Steve Smith - had both a win and a loss.
