Tank-Weld Metals win one-day challenge

Tank-Weld Metals defeated Jamaica Broilers Group 2-1 on penalty kicks, after both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the Catherine's Peak/Western Sports-sponsored One-Day Five-A-Side Challenge competition last Saturday at the NWC Playfield, Mona.

Twenty-six teams participated in this year's renewal. The teams were placed in four groups, with the top two advancing to the quarter-finals. The quarter-finals saw Peak Bottling clipping G4S 2-1 in penalty kicks, Jamaica Broilers clipped Western Sports 1-0, defending champions Scotiabank Group stopped Marksman 2-0 and Tank-Weld Metals defeated Flow 2-0. In the semi-finals, Jamaica Broilers bettered Scotiabank Group 2-1 and Tank-Weld Metals defeated Peak Bottling 1-0.

The final was a competitive game. Tank-Weld Metals took the lead in the sixth minute when Theo Brown scored. Jamaica Broilers got their equaliser two minutes later when Corey Sewell beat Richard McCallum. The game went into penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw and McCallum made two saves and also scored his penalty kick to ensure that his team won. They received $30,000 for their victory. Jamaica Broilers took home $15,000 for second place.

Andre Clennon of Tank-Weld Metals was the leading goal-scorer (six goals), while Richard McCallum won the best goalkeeper award and MVP of the tournament. He conceded on two goals from nine matches.

The 2011 Business House Five-A-Side Football season kicks off on Saturday, June 4, at the NWC Playfield, Mona, with the dress parade of all 60 teams. Supreme Ventures Sports Betting, through their Jusbet brand, will sponsor the division one and two competitions for the second year. Starting time will be 2 p.m.

Defending division one champions Tank-Weld Metals will play last year division-two champions, National Water Commission, in the opening match of the season at 3:30 p.m.
