With every piece that was entered in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) parish finals getting a medal, principal of Sts Peter and Paul Preparatory School, Karen Siyanbola, said she was proud of her students.

Siyanbola said students were entered in music, dance and drama. In dance, the students got eight gold and five silver medals while in music, they got four silver, one bronze and a gold for a solo-recorder piece by Sekai Smart-Macaulay. In drama, they received one bronze, two gold and three silver medals. She added that there are plans to enter the school in the visual arts competition next year.

"Walking away with a medal for every single item that we put onstage, they have done exceptionally well. They always come back with a medal," she told The Gleaner.

Winners

As for the national finals later this month, Siyanbola said, "they are going to do excellently. When it comes to movement and performance, they are going to do well. They go there to win, but if they don't win, they are winners anyway."

At Sts Peter and Paul, she said, the performing arts was not merely an extra-curricular activity. Instead, it is part of the programme at the school, with specific teachers for each area. Therefore, Siyanbola said the school plans to construct a facility specifically for the visual and performing arts.

"We want to raise funds to build a professional visual and performing arts facility. We hope that in the next two to three years, we can actually build. There is room if we restructure to build all those things," she said.
