Jamalco seek Berger clincher

Former champions Jamalco will be aiming to wrap up the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Berger Paints Super League title today, when they oppose Waulgrovians in Game Two of their best-of-three finals at the Leila Robinson Courts starting 5:30 p.m.

The Winston Nevers-coached Jamalco lead the series 1-0, following their 64-57 win over Waulgrovians in Game One on Thursday. Wayne Shaw, manager of the Jamalco, who last won the title in 2009, said his team will be going all out to end the series today.

"We are confident that we are going to close out this series tomorrow," said Shaw. "However, I think that we had a poor game despite our victory, but once we get it right, we should be champions once more," he said.

Tough game

However, Shaw added that he won't be taking his opponents lightly because they are a very dangerous team.

"We are expecting a tough game from them because they have some very good players who are young and energetic, but I am expecting us to come out on top because of the depth and experience in my team," Shaw stated.

Former national representative Elaine Davis, who shot an excellent 56 goals from 57 attempts in game one, will lead Jamalco's charge for a victory. Waulgrovians dominated the first half of game one, which led to them holding a 34-28 lead at half-time. However, Jamalco rallied in the third period, as they outscored Waulgrovians (20-11) to a 48-45 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Davis is expected to receive support from Marsh Murphy who scored (six goals from seven tries) and Naudia Brown (two from four), along with the likes of national captain, Nadine Bryan, Althea Byfield, Nicole Aiken and Sasher-Gaye Henry.

Meanwhile, Marvette Anderson coach of the Waulgrovians, said she very optimistic her team can level the series.

"We are confident that we can rebound because we made some mistakes in game one and once we can correct these mistakes, I know that we can come out top," said Anderson.

"I know that it is going to be tough for us because they do have a lot of experienced players in their team, but I believe that once we limit our turnovers, then I expect us to get the victory," Anderson added.

Waulgrovians will rest their hopes in the hands of national goal shooter, Jhaniele Fowler, who scored 55 goals from 64 attempts in game one along with goal attack Marion Campbell, who made two from five tries.
