Members of the Jamalco netball team are still celebrating their eighth hold on the Jamaica Netball Association's (JNA) Berger Paints Super League trophy, following their 64-57 win over archrivals Waulgrovians in Game Two of their best-of-three finals on Saturday at the National Arena.

The Clarendon-based Jamalco won 2-0, following their 64-57 win in Game One last Thursday.

Althea Byfield, a senior member of the team who was winning her first ever Super League title, was very happy.

"I am just excited that we never had to play a game three because Waulgrovians are not a team that you want to go toe to toe with because they are very dangerous," said Byfield.

"We are happy that we won because this is my first Open League and it means a lot to me," Byfield added.

Sasher-Gaye Henry, another senior member of Jamalco's team, was also winning the Super League for the first time in her career.

"It is an overwhelming feeling to know that we are on top," said Henry. "We are just looking to build on our performance going forward so as to ensure that we remain winners."

play hard

Henry added: "It was a very tough series because Waulgrovians had some top players and so we really had to play hard to win both games."

Former national shooter Elaine Davis led the way for the champions with 45 goals from 48 attempts. Jamalco trailed Waulgrovians 35-26 at half time and 48-43 at the end of the third period.

However, in an effort to contain Waulgrovians' free-scoring goal shooter, Jhaniele Fowler, Jamalco's coach Winston Never switched ace goal shooter Romelda Aiken to goal defence at the start of the fourth period.

The move paid off for his team, as Jamalco dominated the final quarter and in the process outscored their opponents 24-9 to take the victory. Davis received good support from Aiken (11 from 14), Naudia Brown (five from five) and Marsha Murphy (three from four).

Fowler was the leading scorer for the Marvette Anderson-coached Waulgrovians with 54 goals from 57 attempts.
