Eliminations for the 2011 World Reggae Dance Championship are set to begin on June 17. The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) has announced that the decision was taken to accommodate entries during the upcoming elimination rounds of the championship.

According to World Reggae Dance Championship coordinator, Juliet Cowan-Morgan, though entrants were encouraged to meet the deadline of May 27, the high level of interest generated by the competition has caused the JCDC to implement a proactive solution, offering on-spot registrations at eliminations.

"In keeping with the mantra of unearthing, developing, preserving and showcasing the best of Jamaica's culture, we want to highlight the fact that the opportunity still exists to participate in what promises to be an exciting and high energy display of reggae dancing. Therefore, on-spot registrations for groups comprising between three to six members will be facilitated at the five elimination shows," Cowan-Morgan stated.

fast-growing product

The World Reggae Dance Championship is one of the fastest-growing products, as evidenced by the audience support over the last six years. The competition now boasts international appeal as participants from Japan moved on to the final round in 2009 and 2010. Reggae dance moves are fast becoming the first choice for well-known choreographers.

World Reggae Dance eliminations will kick-off at the Hi-Lo Car Park in Port Maria, St Mary. The remaining shows will take place on June 18 in the Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay; June 24 - Ocean Village Shopping Centre in Ocho Rios, St Ann; June 25 - Santa Plaza, Main Street, St Elizabeth; and July 1 - the Louise Bennett Garden Theatre, 32 Hope Road, Kingston.

All eliminations shows begin at 4 p.m.
