Authorities in Brazil say at least eight suspected drug gang members were killed in a shoot-out with police in a Rio de Janeiro slum.

A police statement says fighting began early yesterday as officers entered a slum in northern Rio.

Police say they transported eight wounded suspects to a hospital, all of whom died from their wounds. An undisclosed amount of drugs were seized along with a small number of weapons.

Authorities in Rio are trying to drive drug gangs from Rio's vast slums and to clamp down on violence ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
