Sri Lanka thrash England

Sri Lanka thrashed England by nine wickets in a one-off Twenty20 yesterday, showing the tourists remain a force in limited over games. The 2011 World Cup finalists chose to bat second and finished on 137-1, comfortably reaching England's 136-9 with almost three overs to spare at the County Ground.

Mahela Jayawardene scored 72 not out, sharing a 97-run partnership with Kumar Sangakkara, who was undefeated on 43.

England were reduced to 12-2 after losing the early wickets of Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter. Kevin Pietersen hit 41 and Eoin Morgan scored 47 to move England to 101-3 before their middle-order collapsed.

England and Sri Lanka meet in five one-day internationals, starting on Tuesday.

England won the three-Test series 1-0.
