Vintage reggae makes its way to Bull Bay

All lovers of roots reggae will be getting a treat at Wickie Wackie Beach in Bull Bay, St Thomas, come July 16 at 'Vibes Is Right.'

A party geared towards roots reggae music, 'Vibes is Right' is organised by four ladies, who love reggae music, called the Tribal Council.

The council consists of Janine 'Jah9' Cunningham, Kareece Lawrence, Natalie Reid, and Lesley-Ann Welsh. Lawrence told The Gleaner, "We're all born in the '90s and love reggae music. For me, my dad used to collect vinyl and used to play them at home, so I grew up listening to that kind of music. We love the culture and we're all directors in Manifesto Jamaica, which is about culture preservation and exposing the arts, empowerment and education."

According to Lawrence, the Tribal Council recognised that 'rockers music' was missing from the party scene, so they were filling the gap by introducing a vintage-style lovers rock party.

'Vibes Is Right' is the first part of a series which is being planned.

Lawrence said, "We have a beautiful venue. It's an early vibe so patrons can come early and leave early feeling pleased. We will not be advertising the DJs as we want patrons to come with an open heart. The headline sound is Veteran sound that was popular in the rockers era, and we will be playing vinyl, so the sound will be great.

"It's an affair for all lovers of roots reggae music no matter how old you are or aren't."

The music will include the likes of Jimmy Cliff, Jacob Miller, Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Peter Tosh, Kiddus I, Heptones, Maytones, Hugh Mundell, Tyrone Taylor, Alton Ellis, Leroy Cobbles, Junior Byles, and more.

The Tribal Council is hoping patrons will stick to the theme and dress the part.

Lawrence explained, "We want people to dress the part, so for ladies: florals, v-neck, stripe, polka dot, blue jeans shorts, dashiki and jeans, halter dress, jumper jeans, high-waist pants. For the men: Clarks, bell pants, sweat shirt and pants, caps, rasta tam, big plaid colours, caps wid broad rim, bright ties, camouflage green shirt and pants, rag in back pocket, wide-leg pants and long-sleeve shirt with vest over, Adidas sweats. However, contemporary dress is fine too."

According to Lawrence, there will be more surprises in store at the venue.
