Young cricketers win JN scholarships

New Hope Primary and All-Age students, Evon Jones and Kevin Samuels, flashed big smiles on Thursday after becoming the first recipients of Jamaica National's (JN) Primary and All-Age cricket scholarships.

The duo, who represented their school in the primary and all-age divisions, copped the scholarships after emerging as the most valuable players in their respective finals at Sabina Park.

New Hope Primary defeated St Patrick's by two wickets, while New Hope All-Age defeated Norman Gardens by 186 runs.

Jones made a top score of 31 in New Hope Primary's 123-8. This was in reply to St Patrick's 121.

Samuels made 49 in New Hope All-Age's challenging 228-8. Norman Gardens, in their reply, were restricted to 39-9.

"I am positive that these people will benefit from this opportunity; and that they will continue to excel in their schoolwork, as well as in the game of cricket," said JN's senior sponsorship and events strategist Joy Bennett, shortly after presenting the scholarships.

Congratulations

The competition, which is organised by the Jamaica Cricket Association in conjunction with the Sports Development Foundation, is being sponsored for a 10th year by the building society, and provided formal cricket training for more that 6,000 students from 386 schools.

"Congratulations to the scholarship recipients, and congratulations to New Hope Primary and Junior High for winning both competitions," said Jamaica Cricket Association president, Lyndel Wright.

"It's a testimony to the hard work that you guys have put in, as it is clear that those who are involved with New Hope are doing something right," he added.

New Hope All-Age, which along with its primary version is located in Westmoreland, were winning the title for the 10th time in 13 years, while New Hope Primary was winning it for the first time after two previous final appearances.

New Hope All-Age, because of their outstanding performance over the last 13 years, retired the All-Age trophy.

"It feels good to win again, and to have the present trophy now retired at the school," said New Hope's coach, Grantley Reid.

"We just hope we can continue winning and making our school, community and parish proud."
