STETHS bag major trophies at awards ceremony

St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Innswood High were the toasts of the recent GraceKennedy/Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) cricket awards ceremony hosted at STETHS in Santa Cruz.

STETHS topped all rural schools winning the Grace Limited Overs trophy, the Grace Headley Cup and the all-island Spalding Cup. STETHS also reached the finals of the First Global Financial Services Under 16 and the Grace/Jackie Hendriks Under 14. Quite naturally, several of the key individual awards went their way.

Clive Ledgister won the award for top rural coach, captain Paul Palmer Jr collected batting awards for posting two centuries including 104 not out in the Headley Cup final against Tacky, his third such achievement. His outstanding contribution to the team on the field was also matched by an exemplary display off it as well, as he was awarded the Douglas Orane Award. This award provides a financial contribution of $100,000 per annum for three years at an accredited local university or institution of higher learning.

Best individual bowling performance

His National Under 19 teammate, fast bowler Omar Samuels, had the best individual bowling performance of eight wickets for 27 runs.

Innswood were not left out as they collected awards for being the top urban school after winning the Grace Shield and the Jamaica International Insurance Company Cup. Coach Kirk Gordon collected the top urban award while captain Oraine Williams walked away with the prestigious Carlton Alexander award for sportsmanship, leadership and discipline.

Williams who represented Jamaica in the Under 19 competition, won the overall award for most runs, 905, including four individual trophies in the category for persons registering centuries. Teammate Pete Salmon collected awards for most wickets, 58, and the best individual bowling performance of nine wickets for 27 runs.

Old Harbour's Rouman Powell was also a standout, winning the awards for most runs in the Headley Cup, 503, as well as being the top all-rounder after bagging 32 wickets.
