Shelly wins 100 metres

World and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce returned to action yesterday to post an 11.11-seconds win in the women's 100 metres at the Lignano track and field meet in Italy.

In the time final Fraser-Pryce finished ahead of compatriot Carrie Russell, 11.20, and American Shalonda Solomon, 11. 21.

Fraser-Pryce, who won the 100m at the Beijing Games in 2008 and in the Berlin World Championships a year later, has been out of action recently because of injury.

Jamaica also topped the men's 100m with Steve Mullings posting 9.98 seconds to beat Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Thompson, 10.06, and American Darvis Patton, 10.07.

South Africa's Oscar Pistorius, a disabled athlete who has been hunting the World Championship 'A' qualifying time for 400 metres, finally achieved his goal.

Pistorius, who runs on carbon-fibre legs, clocked 45.07 seconds to win the event. He beat Jamaicans Lansford Spence, 46.23, and Michael Mason, 46.50. The World Championships 'A' qualifying time is 45.25.
